Herzog Contracting Corp. is currently seeking Equipment Operators in Seattle, WA.
Duties and Responsibilities:
*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.
- Operates and performs operator-level maintenance of several types of heavy equipment including all-terrain construction equipment including end loaders, backhoe tractors, bulldozers, and road graders.
- Operates this equipment to plow, move and broom crushed rock ballast within the track structure, to remove or install track or structure components or complete track or structure elements, to move, load, unload, or stockpile track or structure material, and to move, grade, level, compact, load, or unload embankment material or vegetation or trash. Pulls levers and depresses pedals to drive machines and control working elements such as blades, tamping tools, rail clamps and jacks, ballast brooms, load booms and lines, load buckets, outriggers, rail guide wheel attachments, and projector and extension buggies. Lubricates working parts, changes engine and hydraulic oil and filters, cleans and changes air filters, tightens bolts, inspects and adjusts fluid levels, belt tensions, and dimensioned measurements (e.g. cross level of track), and performs safety inspections of equipment per FRWS using wrenches, screwdrivers, and other small hand and power tools. May arrange for protection of workplace under FRWS. May be designated according to type of equipment operated (e.g. ballast-cleaning machine, ballast regulator, surfacing tamper, tamper, rail crane, tie remover, tie installer, multiple spike driver, or tie crane operator). May work as a member of a crew or independently. May work under the direction of a Railroad Track Repair Leader or Railroad Bridge Repair Leader and may direct the work of Railroad Track Repairers or Railroad Track Repairer Helpers. Performs maintenance, adjustment, inspection, and repair tasks to railroad structures using hand and power tools, construction equipment, and railroad maintenance equipment, performs work in accordance with the FRWS regulations, and additional duties within the general scope of the Services. May work as a member of a crew or independently. May work under the direction of a Railroad Bridge Repair Leader and may direct the work of Railroad Track or Bridge Repairer Helpers.

Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous Heavy Equipment experience, preferably Railroad experience.
- Strong mechanical aptitude preferred, basic mechanical ability required.
- Experience using hand tools, power tools and hydraulic equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to adhere to safety requirements and procedures.
- Willingness to wear the proper and required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as hard hat, steel toed boots, eye and hear protection and face shields and other PPE required for specific tasks.
- Knowledge of safe, efficient use of equipment and tools to perform construction and maintenance tasks.
- The ability to communicate in a professional manner with owners, owners representatives, customers and direct supervisor.
- Ability to work a computer or other hand held device for payroll reports, equipment reports, safety and equipment reports and email correspondence.
- Ability to complete work under time pressure and to maintain composure under the stress of emergency situations.
- Must be able to work well with others.
- Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) the English language
- Bilingual is a plus
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
- Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
- Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements of this job.
- Regularly lift up to 75 pounds of weight, up to an end height of 36 inches for a distance of up to 10 feet.
- Regularly lift up to 50 pounds of weight, up to an end height of 48 inches for a distance of up to 10 feet.
- Regularly carry weight up to 16 pounds for a distance of up to100 feet.
- Regularly push/pull a force up to 25 pounds for up to eight minutes continuously.
- Regularly grasp/squeeze equipment or tools with a force up to 40 pounds.
- Regularly ascend and descend a 10 step ladder with up to 25 pounds. Frequently climb on/off equipment.
- Regularly ascend/descend a step with a height of 28 inches from the floor.
- Regularly kneel, bend, squat for extended periods of time.
- Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
- Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to 1 mile.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet.)
- Available to work a 40 hour work week subject to overtime, on call and alternate shifts that may include weeknights, weekends and holidays.
- Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals.
