JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Transfer Station Manager, this position requires the proficient operation of a limited variety of general hauling, construction, and maintenance of equipment used, and in the maintenance of transfer station facilities.

Pay range: $21.15 - $23.26/hour DOQ

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Operate equipment such as, but not limited to: dump and water trucks, front-end loaders, other similar equipment used for construction, snow removal, maintenance, and repair of County properties.
  • Additional equipment to operate includes, but is not limited to: roll-off truck, skid steer, and horizontal grinder.
  • Perform daily inspections, routine servicing, minor repairs and/or adjustments to equipment.
  • Check and report present or anticipated problems in work areas.
  • Perform manual labor as a crew member involved in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Additional duties which are expected of individuals working in this position at the Transfer Station:

- Assist transfer station customers, collect money for Transfer Station transactions and make appropriate change when necessary, and track cash and charge receipts as required.

- Sort, bale, load, and haul materials for recycling such as: cardboard, paper, plastics, metals, glass, etc.

- Performs routine building maintenance, grounds maintenance, snow removal, and custodial work as required.

  • Perform other Transfer Station Facility related duties as assigned by the Transfer Station Manager as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

High School diploma or equivalent.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:

For Transfer Station Facility –

40 Hour HAZWOPER certification, preferred, required within 3 months of hire.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Requires a level of knowledge and ability to handle all routine tasks, problems and techniques, and/or solve unusual or unique tasks with limited assistance in the full range of job duties. Such a level is generally acquired through at least one (1) year experience operating heavy and/or light equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have a working knowledge of traffic laws, common hazards and safety precautions relevant to construction, road maintenance operation, transfer station facilities – recycling and transfer station operation.
  • Must be proficient in recognizing mechanical problems and making minor repairs to equipment.
  • Must be able to operate cash register and give correct change when necessary
  • Must be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to accurately and effectively transmit and receive information that is necessary to the accomplishment of goals and objectives including effective written and oral communication; ability to keep customers, subordinates, peers, and supervisors informed, and the ability to listen.
  • Must be able to maintain courteous and effective working relationships with the public, County departments, co-workers and other agencies.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid Colorado commercial driver’s license; class B, with air brake endorsements
  • Must be vaccinated against Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis - subject to exceptions by law
  • Must have a working telephone – can be either cell or home phone
  • Must pass background check: Criminal and Traffic

Conviction of a crime will not be an absolute bar to employment

  • Must pass initial and all random alcohol & drug tests
  • Required legal authorization to work - United States citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States

POSSIBLE HEALTH RISKS SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION:

This position has been determined to be an EXTREME exposure risk to “biohazards” associated with blood-borne pathogens HIV (aids), HAV (Hepatitis A) virus, HBV (hepatitis B) virus, and air-borne transmissions of TB (tuberculosis). Members are advised that exposure to a “biohazard” may result in severe illness or death. Members are required by Department policy to use protective equipment and clothing. Inoculation may be required to prevent or treat exposures to “biohazards”. The County provides inoculation of HAV, HBV, (Testing for TB) Chickenpox, Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, & Pertussis), Meningococcal, MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella), and Influenza. Some vaccinations are only required once in a life time, and you may be required to show documentation of the vaccine. Employees who decline to be vaccinated will need to sign a Declination

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK REQUIREMENTS:

Work is primarily performed in a field environment. Work includes extensive periods of walking, standing, bending, climbing, driving vehicles and equipment. There are occasions of lifting, pushing and/or pulling up to one hundred (100) pounds. Some equipment noise levels are loud, and may have open “to the elements” cab. Hearing voice conversation is essential to safe and effective job performance. Clear vision at 20 inches or less and up to 20 feet or more is required; use of corrective eyewear is acceptable. Employees in this position are exposed to a wide variety of climatic conditions such as cold, heat, wind, rain and snow and dust.
