Opening April 2023, Kiewit Luminarium is a new, next-generation science center that will joyfully engage people of all ages and identities to explore astonishing phenomena and learn with their hands. Anticipated to be one of the crowning jewels of the region and a national force in its field, Kiewit Luminarium’s interactive exhibitions and programs will inspire lifelong interest and careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Our purpose-built, 82,000 square-foot facility is complete on the Omaha RiverFront, and we are building the talented team that, together with collaborators and visitors, will bring Kiewit Luminarium to life.

The Kiewit Luminarium Operations team is a dynamic and highly collaborative group of professionals responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility, interactive exhibits and workshop, and the safety and security of visitors in a transformative learning environment. The Exhibit Workshop Manager is responsible for the safe, effective operation of the exhibit workshop, ongoing exhibit maintenance, and generative projects that include exhibit development. Reports to VP Finance & Operations; works closely with Environmental Operations, Experience, and Community Engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the safe and effective operation of the exhibit workshop space, equipment, and associated activities including technical support for educational programs with makers, educators, and Luminators
  • Be the hands-on manager for a nimble, interdisciplinary, and technical team to keep our large collection of interactive exhibits in excellent working condition and play an essential role in the generative development and prototyping of new exhibit experiences
  • Oversee general exhibit workshop operations, including workshop maintenance, installation, material ordering and stocking, and equipment ordering
  • Work comfortably and productively with staff and collaborators – including community partners, researchers, and artists-in-residence - on a range of projects from single exhibit prototypes to full-fledged exhibitions and apprenticeship programs
  • Be a strong steward and skilled user of a variety of specialist equipment and tools
  • Direct timely maintenance decisions; show strong discernment and discipline around choice of forms, materials, and processes
  • Support a fantastic visitor experience and dynamic programs both on and off-site

Experience & Key Competencies:

  • BA/BS degree and/or equivalent experience with minimum 7 years shop work experience including 3+ years in leadership
  • Excellent management and communication skills including the ability to work well with a diverse team and community of learners
  • Workshop knowledge: wood, metal, and plastic fabrication; prototyping and fabrication of exhibits using appropriate production methods; follow safety standards
  • Skilled, experienced user of design software and workshop equipment; comfortable working with/from schematics and sketches as well as detailed shop drawings
  • Lifelong learner with strong sense of curiosity who enjoys problem-solving and invention along with running a tight ship
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds short distances.
  • Ability to safely operate mobile elevated work platforms, shop production equipment, power and hand tools.
  • Ability to perform position functions and must be able and willing to work on-site, in shared indoor and outdoor space with staff and the public following guidelines in accordance with the health department and local ordinances.
