Maine Behavioral Healthcare is seeking a Family Peer Support Partner to work as a part of the Behavioral Health Home Organization team, to provided support to family members with a child(ren) receiving services at our programs.
Maine Behavioral Healthcare (MBH) defines a “Family Peer Support Partner” (FPSP) as a parent of a child with autism or other developmental challenges. The FPSP is required to have 5 or more years of lived experience as a parent, therapeutic foster parent, or a guardian of a child with autism or other developmental delays.
The BHHO is a case management program for MaineCare members with Autism and/or other developmental delays with the goal of integrating and coordinating treatment toward improved physical and behavioral health outcomes.
The FPSP uses the training and skills of the 5 core competencies as set forth by the National Certification Commission for Family Support, to build mutually supportive relationships that allow each parent to grow and learn together. Certification as a Family Peer is required within 12 months of date of employment.
Family Peer Support Partner responsibilities include:
- Encourages families to move toward self-advocacy in the attainment of culturally-specific life goals for themselves and their children and helps them develop the skills to do so by working directly with each family involved in the BHHO program for children.
- Meets with the family member(s) one-on-one to provide support and encouragement towards resiliency.
- Facilitate support groups that address areas of concern for family members in the BHHO program.
- The position requires travel to client’s homes and meetings in the community, in addition to office based work.
- Foster relationships and skill building that improves both the family member’s wellbeing and the child’s wellbeing.
Maine Behavioral Healthcare provides an array of services at our outpatient practices for adults, adolescents and children challenged with mental health, developmental disorders, co-occurring and/or substance use issues. Specifically, our Brunswick location provides these Case Management and Behavioral Health Homes, Counseling, and Psychiatry.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- License/Certifications: Certification as Family Support Specialist: Completion of, or ability to complete, the “Parent/Family Peer Support Training” offered by G.E.A.R. is required. Certification is required within 12 months of hire date. Ability to provide support according to the values and principles of the training is required. Employment will be contingent on the above certification guidelines.
- Experience: Five or more years of lived experience as a parent, therapeutic foster parent, or a guardian of a child with or at risk of serious emotional disturbance, autism or other developmental challenges are required.
- Duties require knowledge of accessing community resources and one to three years of related work experience
- Models strengths-based interactions and treats all individuals with respect. Demonstrates ability to utilize strengths-based approach to problem solving
- Ability to articulate the unique nature of Family Support within traditional service programs
- Good communication skills and an ability to establish rapport with consumers, family members, caregivers and other resource providers. Willingness to further develop communication skills (i.e. written, verbal, and computer). Demonstrated ability to keep focus on continual learning and moving towards positive goals
- Computer proficiency required with ability to demonstrate basic computer skills in using Microsoft Office and Outlook email
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of volunteers, fellow workers
