Under general supervision, a Firefighter/Paramedic provides immediate emergency medical care for the sick and injured at emergency scenes and during transportation to a hospital; performs the duties of fire fighter and related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Positions in this class perform emergency medical treatment, communicate by radio with physicians while at the scene of an emergency, and attend to victims of emergency while en-route to a hospital or until other medical personnel assume the responsibility for care of patients. Positions in this class have considerable independence in selecting proper procedures from a variety of standard methods or procedures, as instructions given by a physician generally do not provide all of the information needed. Incumbents are expected to resolve emergency medical problems confronted through the application of judgment and protocols. At the scene of a fire, Firefighter/Paramedics are under the direct command and supervision of Fire Captain or other command personnel.

Examples of Essential Functions

Responds to emergency calls for medical aid, structural fires, and reports of injury accidents; drives paramedic van to scene of the emergency; diagnoses medical problems; establishes direct radio contact with a physician or other qualified hospital personnel; administers cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), defibrillation, intravenous solutions, parenteral injections, emergency bandaging, and splinting and other medical procedures as prescribed by law; applies cardiac monitoring devices; keeps paramedic equipment in order; monitors supplies and is accountable for the inventorying of drugs; gives public demonstrations; teaches first aid and CPR classes; inventories equipment, recording deficiencies, restocking items in truck, and ensuring that truck is totally equipped; conducts training drills in medical treatment techniques; performs fire hydrant tests; tests standard firefighting equipment; conducts fire inspections; completes response reports and other documents; performs the duties of Firefighter; may act as Fire Engineer or Fire Captain, as assigned; operates City vehicles; and performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training, education and experience, which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
A typical qualifying background is experience performing a full range of fire suppression work supplemented by skilled experience performing varied paramedic work. At least 1 year of current experience as an EMT/Paramedic is highly desirable.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
Candidates must possess the following to be considered for the position (PLEASE ATTACH):
  • A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record. A CA Class C is preferred.
  • Current California Paramedic License or National Registry Paramedic License.
  • Cardio pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate (American Heart Association).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate (American Heart Association).
  • A California State Fire Training Firefighter I or graduation from a Firefighter I accredited Regional Training Program (ARTP) with IFSAC and/or Pro Board seals showing you are certified to FF I, Haz- Mat Awareness/FRO, Confined Space awareness, and Wildland Fire Fighter I.
  • A State of California Fire Marshall Firefighter II certification is highly desirable.
REQUIRED: Proof of successful completion of the Biddle Physical Ability Test OR the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) taken within the last 12 months. Please submit verification letter /ID card with application materials.

CERTIFICATION INFORMATION:
  • Must obtain San Diego County accreditation by Academy start date. For information on obtaining accreditation click HERE. For workshop information click HERE.

  • At a minimum, a California Class "C" Driver's License with a firefighter endorsement must be obtained by the end of 24 months and maintained as a condition of continued City employment.

  • Department of Defense applicants may refer to the same procedures available to out-of-state applicants. The only difference will be that instead of providing copies of your out-of-state certification diplomas, you will provide copies of your DOD certificates with IFASAC and/or Pro Board seals showing you are certified to Fire Fighter I, Haz Mat Awareness/FRO and Wildland Fire Fighter I.

  • Firefighter II Certificate is highly desirable.

  • Paramedic license, current ACLS and CPR certifications are required to be maintained as a condition of continued City employment.

The employee may have to move up to 50 lbs. and transport up to 100 lbs. objects frequently (depending on position). Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to detect, determine, perceive, identify, estimate, and assess work related objects and/or work products based on position specific designated tasks. The employee may be required to work overtime to complete assignments. Must be able to work a flexible schedule; must be willing to work 24-hour shifts. Use of personal vehicle during employment may also be required.

Effective July 1, 2021, employees who possess a BA/BS from any accredited university shall be paid $173.08 each biweekly (per pay period).
