FISH HATCHERY SPECIALIST 2
HATCHERIES DIVISION
Appointment Length – Three (3) months
STANDBY DUTIES ARE CURRENTLY ASSIGNED
The first review of applications will take place on January 8th, 2023.
We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Fish Hatchery Specialists to work alongside a diverse team to support conservation while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational opportunities in the state of Washington.

Picture yourself, performing technical and scientific duties at hatchery facilities within a complex, rearing anadromous and inland species of fish. .
This is an opportunity to support the agency mission by performing scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at either the Dayton or Cottonwood acclimation pond.

Our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2,
Performs Fish Culture Duties including:
- Feeding fish their calculated daily ration.
- Monitoring fish behavior and health.
- Operating off site adult collection facility, Identifies, sorts, and samples species for spawning and adult distribution and reports to lead worker and supervisor daily.
- Collecting fish tissue and fluid samples; recording data.
- Conducting remote trapping and spawning operations.
- Participating in fish sampling.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Schedule:
- 24/7 availability is required.
- 40 hours per week – Saturday – Friday.
- Cottonwood position will work 10 days on, 4 days off.
- Standby:
- Standby duties are assigned to this position.
- Standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day after the regular 8-hour shift is over. While on standby this position will work ten (10) days on and be off four (4) days.
- While on standby, employees must be able to respond to alarms within 15 minutes.
- All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.
- Travel:
- Travel within complex as needed.
- Housing:
- Housing is not provided for this position.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Pickup truck, blower feeder, and assorted hand tools and trap tools.
- Customer Interactions:
- Regularly answer questions from public.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.
Or
- One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1.
Or
- An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field And one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Or
- Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field And one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Or
- Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school And one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
- A valid driver’s license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two or four-year degree in Fisheries or related field.
