The Fleet & Attractions Mechanic works diligently to promote the proper function of all fleet vehicles and equipment, and attractions equipment. The position is responsible for providing routine and scheduled preventative maintenance, as well as emergency maintenance when necessary to ensure the safe and proper operation of the fleet and attractions equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Priority 1: Fleet Vehicle Maintenance

  • Properly document the intake of vehicles for maintenance
  • Diagnose all incoming problems
  • Record all service in work order management system
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Coordinator to order repair parts
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels to help reduce fleet down time while also being efficient with Zoo resources
  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance and repairs to a high-quality standard
  • Record all parts, fluids, and time associated with each vehicle
  • Help assess fleet condition and provide recommendations for replacements
  • Maintain miscellaneous small equipment and generators throughout campus

Priority 2: Attractions Maintenance

  • Schedule and perform planned maintenance and repair for rides, attractions, and traveling exhibits, including but not limited to required hourly, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly inspections
  • Provide updates and regular reports of safety concerns, maintenance issues, completed repairs, and any other resources needed by Director of Facilities and Attractions Manager
  • Conduct regular track and structural inspections for a variety of rides and attractions
  • Identify problems and necessary repairs for mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic equipment, including but not limited to crossing arms at Denver Zoo Railroad
  • Order, record, and maintain equipment and parts inventory for each ride and attraction

Other Responsibilities and Duties

  • As a core member of the maintenance team, this position may be called upon to aid with hydraulic, pneumatic, or other related repairs throughout campus by assisting other trades personnel. Denver Zoo retains the right to add or change duties and/or responsibilities at any time.
  • Acts as a good steward of Denver Zoo’s resources in the purchase of parts and equipment inventory.
  • The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of Denver Zoo.
  • This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations and the public.

Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications

  • Completion of 2-year automotive degree, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of 3-years’ experience as an auto mechanic or similar role, with knowledge and experience working with various engines, equipment, hydraulics, pneumatics, vehicle diagnostic systems and methods, etc. Excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic vehicle components is essential to success in this role, coupled with the ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse team.
  • Proven computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams) are necessary.
  • Requires organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work and tasks.
  • Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task and changing environment, and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Requires the ability to embrace, support, and integrate Denver Zoo’s philosophies to promote and demonstrate its commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and anti-racism.
  • Schedule Availability: Schedule may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and on-call for emergencies.

Position Conditions

  • Ability to pass a physical examination, background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
  • Clear driving record
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • ASE certification is required.

Compensation

Range for this position is $22.21 - $32.21 (hourly).
