The Advanced Development Programs (ADP) Business Unit is Blue Origin’s team dedicated to developing mission architectures, creating, and fostering new technologies into our existing offerings, building our next generation of leaders, and commercializing new platforms, such as our planned Lunar Lander program, Blue Moon (Link:

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight in the area of Flight Operations for the Orbital Reef space station. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Responsibilities:
  • Accountable to the Mission Systems and Flight Ops Director for establishing and developing the astronaut office and support needed to plan, train for, and reliably execute complex crewed LEO missions in parallel with support of distributed customers (for both professional and guest/visiting astronauts)
  • Working with the Director and Crew Operations Lead (and other external orgs such as Human Integration, Customer Experience) to develop selection criteria and a screening process for astronaut candidates. Flight Crew Lead will also co-chair the selection process and make recommendations to the Director for final selection
  • Working with the Ops Training lead and Training Development Lead to define the training required for all Orbital Reef Mission types (Reef Pathfinder, Orbital Reef) including VV operations where another provider (e.g., Boeing) trains the VV operations
  • Working with the Crew Operations Lead to identify candidates for mission assignments for recommendations to the Director
  • Support vehicle and habitat development teams in reviews and design-for-operability assessments
  • Establish an agile, simple, and reliable concept of operations that includes human crew (astronauts) in the operational loop
  • Working with the Operations Training Lead and Crew Operations Lead to develop training of the mission assignees, evaluate crew members during training events and with the Crew Operations Lead, Ops Training Lead and Director determine candidates’ readiness for flight as part of the Certification of Flight Readiness process
  • Identify candidates for the role of CAPCOM in conjunction with the Director, Crew Operations Lead, and working with the Operations Training Lead to develop training of the CAPCOMs. Crew Ops Lead will be final authority in certifying CAPCOM candidates.
  • Conduct monthly tagups with crew on-orbit or as needed if events dictate
  • Support the CoFR review process representing all aspects of crew readiness for any given mission
  • Working with Crew Operations Lead develop a conops for support of families of crew members during missions
  • Support development of a process and participate in execution of mishaps that involve the crew
  • Develop review process of flown members as part of a path for reflight if appropriate (performance level assessment) with input from the Crew Operations Lead.
  • Work closely with the head of the Medical Operations branch to define medical requirements, monitoring and support including planning medical testing as part of the selection process
  • Coordinate with the crew offices on other projects (e.g., Lunar) to ensure uniformity in concepts, training, and execution where practical
  • With support from the Flight Ops Engineering Lead coordinate recertification of the Starliner on the New Glenn launch vehicle (e.g., helping define/review abort modes, abort conops) or certification of any future crewed vehicles
  • Consult with Crew Operations lead and Customer Experience as appropriate for guest expectations and conops
  • Preference to not be an active astronaut (i.e., in the flight rotation), but could serve as a backup for initial missions
Qualifications:
  • M.S. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics or related technical field
  • 15+ years of relevant experience as a member of a mature and professional spaceflight operations team performing dynamic, high- consequence operations
  • 5+ years of relevant experience leading teams in the disciplined conduct of dynamic, high consequence spaceflight operations
  • First principles knowledge of all major spacecraft subsystems
  • Experience with human spacecraft missions and operations
  • Requirements development experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Very high judgement and ability to perform duties in high pressure situations
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

  • Experience in spacecraft design, integration and test
  • Experience in design, integration, test and deployment of ground data systems for spaceflight
  • Experience training and developing operations personnel, pilots and/or astronauts
