Tierra del Sol Foundation is looking for dedicated and reliable Floater Instructor to play an integral role in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the places they live, work, and go to school.

One key group of DSPs are our Floater Instructor, who are responsible for planning and conducting lessons and activities for clients and plays an integral role in supporting clients to: utilize effective communication systems; develop positive relationships with others; become valued, contributing members of the community; work toward achievement of their life’s goals, and attain a true community-based, integrated, quality of life. The Floater Instructor is expected to become familiar with all of the consumers he/she serves so that he/she can make valuable contributions to Individual PATH/Rehabilitation/Habilitation and Service Plans, Person-Centered Planning meetings and Circle of Support meetings.

Job tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a substitute Instructor as needed. This includes gathering/maintaining materials for sub file:
  • Emergency information sheets on all clients
  • Updated class/work schedules for each client
  • List of current ISP goals for each client
  • Progress notes, including documentation of client's presence/absence
  • Serve as an exceptional role model Direct Support Professional including holding up all areas of the code of ethics, interactions with co-workers, and adherence to responsibilities held for all DSPs. This includes, but is not limited to: respectful client interactions, positive behavior supports, systematic instructions and other teaching strategies
  • Assist with development and implementation of Individual Service Plans and Behavior Support Plans for each client, based on information obtained through Discovery curriculum and behavioral assessments.
  • Document client progress through assessment/data collection instruments.
  • Follow daily lesson plans/schedules, which address Individual Service Plan objectives for all assigned clients
  • Provide training for clients in functional classroom/workplace/community activities, which will allow them to achieve their Individual Service Plan objectives
  • Assist clients in accessing a variety of community locations using company/personal vehicles/public transportation, including but not limited to provide mobility training, and general supervision and safety oversight
  • Provide supervision and training to clients in self-advocacy and social/leisure skills
  • Provide mentorship and support to Instructors
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks needed to improve client success in employment and at community-based locations
  • Provide small group and one-on-one training of individuals in specific educational supports, job skills, and general college/work behaviors
  • Conduct educational analysis of needed study, writing, and executive functioning skills in cooperation with the SSD/DSP & S/Special Services office and/or college professors (if applicable)
  • Ensure that all assigned academic projects and priorities are consistently completed according to college standards and expectations (if applicable)
  • Maintain regular communication with professors regarding their satisfaction with the student’s performance (if applicable)
  • Other duties as assigned

This is a 35-40 hour per week position, typically Monday through Friday. The schedule fluctuates according to the specific program the Floater Instructor is assigned to work in. For this position, staff will have a 30 minute working lunch when actively supporting clients. A working lunch agreement will be on file. These hours and duties are subject to change. Staff are expected to commute while working to various sites. Mileage reimbursement shall be provided.

Specific Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in the field of Human Services preferred, in addition to experience providing training/instruction to adults with developmental disabilities
  • Must demonstrate a working knowledge of task analysis/assessment/positive behavior supports, and have clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexible work schedule and ability to travel to various locations using personal vehicle
