Summary/Objective:

This position is responsible for preparing and serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack while maintaining compliance with the Food Safety and Sanitation Regulations in a timely yet effective manner.


Essential Functions

1. Assists in taking temperatures of food (at delivery and point of service) and equipment (freezer, refrigerator). Maintains up to date and organized records of temperatures.

2. Maintains daily menu production records.

3. Ensures that main kitchen operation needs, issues or problems are communicated in a timely and professional manner.

4. Assists in receiving orders from vendors, ensuring that proper items have been delivered. Assist in organizing food storage.

5. Adheres to sanitation and safety procedures prescribed for the Early Head Start/Head Start kitchen in compliance with Health and Safety Regulations.

6. Assembles food, dishes, utensils and supplies needed for timely meal preparation.

7. Discards all utensils/dishware using approved sanitation methods. Returns all items to their proper storage site.

8. Participates in individualized continuing education plan including ServSafe Certification, Allergen Training, CPR and First Aid.

9. Assists in inspection of foods, including quality, quantity and appropriateness for service to students.

10. Assists in recording reports from staff related to acceptance/rejection of foods. Relays information to supervisor weekly.

11. Is aware and knowledgeable about food allergies and conditions of children. Ensures that appropriate foods are served.

12. Able to provide additional center or classroom support as needed.

13. Follows all general staff responsibilities in addition to specific job responsibilities.

14. Attends all meetings and training sessions as required.

15. Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position will typically operate indoors in a kitchen setting.


Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds. Frequent standing, walking, lifting/carrying, and other dexterous motions required.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This position typically operates on a 37.5-hour workweek schedule. Must be able to work flexible hours as needed. This may also include covering kitchen positions at Dimock’s other Head Start/Early Head Start sites.


Required Education and Experience

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.

2. CPR & First Aid Certification, as well as Allergen Training Certification, required within 90 days of hire.

3. Food Handler Certification required.
