Job description
Great Basins Institute’s AmeriCorps program places many of its members into service opportunities where they learn valuable work skills for current and future positions in addition to earning an education award with a modest living allowance. In turn, the members gain and develop an appreciation for environmental conservation, gain management and data collection skills and are given a chance to work with partner agencies such as the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, and the State of Nevada Divisions of Forestry, Wildlife, Parks and Lands. Once the AmeriCorps members finish their service term, they are well prepared to tackle new positions within GBI or outside of GBI.
Member Duties : The Forestry Tech will perform veg management and restoration projects within forest/woodland areas. Duties may include: •Perform standardized timber cruising, flagging unit boundaries, and stand exam data collection using standard instruments, direct measurements, observations, and on-site inspections. •Select and mark individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines and silvicultural prescriptions. •Assist with inspections of contractors and other field teams implementing fuels reduction project activities. •Conduct thinning and hazard tree abatement utilizing mechanical and hand treatment methods. •Implementing project prescriptions using established methods and tools to conduct accurate field measurements. •Conduct resource surveys and mapping efforts in order to define prescription/population boundaries based on management plan. •Collect, process, clean, manage, and/or analyze forest/woodland data in support of project objectives and outcomes.
