Assistant Professor in the Product Design Department is a renewable non-tenure track, full-time, and benefits-eligible position. The position possesses a strong commitment to teaching a range of 2D analogue, digital and 3D courses offered within our first-year core curriculum. The Assistant Professor is responsible for and contributes to teaching and curriculum development of undergraduate Product Design courses, student advising, departmental and college service and committee involvement, and creative professional practice. Areas of knowledge and expertise include multidisciplinary skills in 2D, 3D hand and digital making and general knowledge of various hard and soft materials. Must be able to work efficiently, cooperatively, and collaboratively in a team environment. This position reports to the Chair, Assistant Chair, and relevant Area Head within the Department
Location Los Angeles, CA (Westchester) Essential Duties Summary
Full-Time Faculty are responsible for teaching effectively, pursuing ongoing professional achievement, and contributing service to their home department and the College. Fulfilling this work makes up 100% of their responsibilities.

Specific responsibilities are likely to include:
  • Teach courses as scheduled and in alignment with the mission and learning outcomes of the Department and College: Hold a full-time studio course contact hour load, consisting of 18 contact hours per week or 9 credit hours each Fall and Spring semester, and perform service as noted.
  • Prepare the syllabus and any supporting materials associated with teaching the course, and begin each semester fully prepared for classes.
  • Evaluate and improve the course content and pedagogy relevant to contemporary approaches and academic and industry standards including introducing and discussing sustainability and diverse topics beyond Euro-centric approaches and creating inclusive learning environment.
  • Record attendance and grading in a timely manner for students and the College’s record keeping.
  • Advise students outside of class hours regarding academic issues during the defined office hours.
  • Refer students as needed to Student Affairs and other Campus Life resources. – Serve 6 hours on average per week in service to the department and the College, as assigned by the Department Chair. Participate and contribute to College’s shared governance system through Academic Assembly, Faculty Senate, Academic Assembly subcommittees, ad-hoc committees, task forces of various topics.
  • Departmental service may include but is not limited to providing academic advising to departmental students, participating in the Department Faculty Counsel, attending departmental meetings, organizing visiting artists & designer series for department, monitoring department lab hours, assisting Chairs with scheduling courses and assigning physical resources, supervising classroom assistants, and representing department at internal and external events and other occasions as assigned.
  • Contribute to Program assessment as scheduled.

  • Support and mentor diverse students and their successful academic progress and career preparation.

  • Must be responsive to work-related phone calls and emails during non-business hours on occasion
Required Qualifications
One or more of the following degrees: BFA, MFA, BA, BS BDes, BID or related field.
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in first-year art and design fundamentals with an expertise in the field of Life Drawing, Drawing, or related field.
  • Substantial knowledge of historical and contemporary artists and designers.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a successful course relating to the fundamentals of 2D, 3D designs, visual literacy, working knowledge of materials and fabrication for design studio courses.
  • Sustained record of creative and professional practice in related art and design fields.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • Strong ability to work creatively and effectively with a diverse student body as part of a team of professional designers, artists, and educators.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, problem-solving skills, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural environment and committed to fostering an inclusive culture.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies within Otis’s diverse communities, internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to a changing work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree (MFA, MDes, etc.)
  • Two years of teaching experience beyond graduate school.
  • Skills and knowledge in digital drawing tools.
  • Excellent organization, and time management skills.
  • Computer literacy, working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Adobe Suite, and digital software including Outlook.
  • Willingness to learn and teach in other areas of the Product Design program.
