Support the Charlottesville Department of Utilities in fulfilling its service to provide efficient and safe utilities to all in our community. The Charlottesville Department of Utilities - Gas Division is seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as a Gas Service Technician who is highly motivated and who strives for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.
Charlottesville Gas is a natural gas utility owned and operated by the City of Charlottesville and provides residents of Charlottesville and urban areas of Albemarle County with safe, efficient, reliable and economical service. We currently have approximately 21,000 customers in the area and are committed to excellence in service to the community, the City and our neighbors. The Gas Service Technician performs skilled work in the installation and relocation of gas service lines, meters, regulators, and related devices; does related work as required.
The preferred hiring amount will be between $17.01 to $24.99 an hour ($35,380.80 to $51,979.20 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position which provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City's retirement options, gym membership reimbursement, and continuing education/training opportunities.

Installing and relocating domestic and commercial meters and regulators;

Restoring and disconnecting gas service;

Turning gas and water meters on/off;

Investigating, locating, and repairing gas leaks;

Recording meter readings and identifying and logging meter numbers;
-
Installs pressure clocks on gas equipment to monitor problems;
-
Installs, adjusts, and repairs regulators as well as pressure gauges;
-
Sizes gas services, lines, and regulators for customer BIU needs;
-
Investigates, locates, and repairs gas leaks;
-
Red tags appliances if a hazard to property or life exists;
-
Conducts a yearly business leak survey and/or weekly sampling of odorant readings;
-
Performs related tasks as required.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by training.

Some experience in pipefitting and gas distribution or general construction work.

Position is subject to emergency call; must be able to be contacted by phone in case of emergency and reside within 30 minutes response time to the City Yard.

Maintain all certifications as required by applicable federal, state and local regulations.
Skills: Ability to use specialized tools and equipment used in gas pipefitting; ability to obtain certification for Hilti-Gun and for plastic fusion; ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public. Thorough knowledge of the safe methods and practices used when working with gas lines, meters, regulators, appliances, and related devices. General knowledge of the equipment and materials used in gas work. Knowledge of local fire codes, plumbing, and mechanic codes; knowledge of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and how to test for safe level as required by OSHA.
This position in the Charlottesville Department of Utilities is subject to emergency and stand by call and is subject to Federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

Long-term temporary employees are eligible for all benefits except retirement. Interns, temporary, seasonal, substitute, and relief employees are not eligible for benefits.

- HMO: $0 premium for employee only coverage
- POS 1: Employee-only premium of $36.28 per biweekly pay
- POS 2: Employee-only premium of $13.02 per biweekly pay
- (Dependent coverage is available but the cost of the premium is not subsidized.)
- Prescription Card ($10 generic, $30 lower cost name brand, $55 higher cost name brand)

- A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
- A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
