Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Germanna is currently looking for a General Accountant. The General Accountant is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the general ledger through accurate and timely processing, recording, and reconciliation of accounting transactions and performing relevant financial reporting for Germanna Community College decisionmakers and stakeholders.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for accurate and timely processing, recording, and reconciliation of transactions involving federal, state, local, and grant funds
  • Prepares financial reports, analysis, and schedules to document and communicate the financial status of various programs
  • Assists the Accounting Manager and Director of Finance in budget development and monitoring, routine systems reconciliations, yearend closing, and annual ARMICS testing and certification
  • Assists the Accounting Manager and Director of Finance in interpreting and implementing federal, state, local and VCCS policies, procedures, and regulations

May be cross trained on various Business Office processes in order to provide backup capabilities. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with a major in accounting or the equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 3-5 years’ experience in general accounting working with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and/or governmental accounting principles
  • Intermediate/Advanced Proficiency in MS Office 365 applications
  • Experience in analyzing, reconciling, and reporting complex accounting information
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in business or accounting or professional certification as CPA, CMA, and/or CIA
  • Experience in fund accounting in a higher education environment
  • Experience with Commonwealth of Virginia systems such as Cardinal, AIS, and/or SIS
