Summary:

Engages in pruning, thinning, harvesting and all aspects of growing tree crops by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Harvests seasonal fruits such as cherries, apples, pears, etc., according to method appropriate for type of fruit, by hand.
  • Carries and positions work aids, such as ladders, and/or buckets.
  • Selects fruit to be harvested, according to size, shape and color.
  • Grasps, twists, and pulls fruit, to separate crop from plant and places fruit into bags, buckets, or trays, exercising care to avoid plant fruit damage.
  • Empties filled containers into collection boxes or bins.
  • May stand on ladders or elevated platforms, stoop over plants to reach fruit.
  • May sort through fruit removing poor quality fruit, foreign matter like twigs and grasses.
  • May remove ladders, bags, buckets, boxes, from work area to clean growing areas.
  • May prune using loppers on ladders and platforms.
  • May thin tree fruits using hands on ladders and platforms.
  • Other jobs may include pulling weeds, planting, trellis work, tree training, painting trees, helping install poly tube in new plantings, and general clean up.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to comprehend simple verbal instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor and coworkers.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to count is preferred but not required.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Complete assignments on time as directed by foreman or crew boss
  • Observes safety and security procedures; Reports potentially unsafe conditions; Uses equipment and materials properly.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
