We are looking for a fun, energetic counselor to join the best team in the Twin Cities!

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center is a Hospital based clinic within M Health, integrating three organizations: Fairview Health Services, UMP, and the University of Minnesota! We deliver a full range of services in the delivery of quality, high-risk obstetrical care, detailed fetal ultrasound, fetal diagnosis and treatment, genetic counseling, and support services.

We provide genetic counseling to women and families during the preconception and prenatal period.

MFM Genetic Counselor responsibilities include:
  • Acquire medical and family histories
  • Discuss with the patient which prenatal testing options are appropriate, facilitate decision making and provide informed consent for prenatal screenings and invasive genetic testing
  • Interpret genetic testing results and report results to patient in a timely manner
  • Communicate how inherited diseases and conditions may affect the patient and their families
  • Provide encouraging counseling to patients after results are received
  • Work with MFM team, including physicians, care coordinators, RNs, sonographers, and scheduling staff, to help coordinate care of pregnancy for fetuses with anomalies and genetic conditions
  • Aide in transitioning care of our MFM patients to our pediatric genetic services after delivery
Responsibilities/Job Description:
Genetic counselors across the organization are involved in several specialty clinics including maternal-fetal medicine, general genetic's clinic, metabolic clinic, bone marrow transplant clinic, cystic fibrosis clinic, hearing loss clinic, neurofibromatosis clinic, disorders of sexual development clinic, oncology, among others. We also have genetic counseling staff involved in the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory. This range in diversity provides new genetic counselor's access to clinical expertise in many areas of genetics in one institution. The clinics requiring genetic counseling are maternal fetal medicine, pediatric specialty clinics and oncology clinics. The selected candidate will work with the U of M/Fairview team of genetic counselors, physician specialists, medical geneticists, and laboratory personnel at University of Minnesota Health.
  • Coordinate patient activities for genetics department/clinics
  • Counsel patients and families seen at clinics.
  • Administer genetic counseling service for families for whom molecular methods of diagnosis can offer carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis
  • Develop and provide educational services to health providers and community groups
  • Provide educational opportunities for various learner types affiliated with an academic institution.
  • Develop educational materials regarding genetic disease for health providers & the lay public.
  • Demonstrates the ability to deliver care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling
  • American Board of Medical Genetics Certified
