Ph.D. Position in Biologically Inspired Systems of Systems Resilience
About the Opportunity: The Biologically Inspired Design for Resilience Lab (BID4R Lab) is seeking applications for 2 Ph.D. Students in the area of Systems Engineering. The students will receive fill financial support including a stipend and tuition coverage. The candidate will be working in a small group lead by Dr. Bryan Watson investigating the use of inspiration from nature to improve complex system resilience. You can expect personal mentorship from a PI who cares about your personal growth as well as research productivity.

Why: The BID4R lab seeks motivated, honest, self-driven individuals from a variety of backgrounds in our investigations. Previous research questions include:
- How can ant colony behavior be used to improve emergency power resilience?

- Can the structure of food webs be used to increase a lumber harvesting system resilience?

- How is biologically inspired design used in engineering today?

- How can we measure resilience?

Who? We seek candidates from a variety of backgrounds including Civil Engineering,
Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and even Biology
(with prior Computer Science Experience). We use system dynamic and agent-based modeling approaches. Backgrounds in resilience or reliability engineering, modeling and simulation, or ecology are helpful, but not required. The BiD4R is a transdisciplinary, innovative, and exciting environment.
