Position Summary
The Graphic Designer is a key member of the creative team in the University Marketing office at William & Mary. The Graphic Designer reports to the Director of Art & Design and is responsible for digital & print design, email marketing & social media design as well as presentation coordination & development and university brand & visual identity across three key areas: enrollment, advancement and institutional reputation.
The Graphic Designer finds the most effective way to communicate varied messages to diverse audiences in print and digital media using a variety of methods including color, type, illustration, photography, and various other techniques, while adhering to the visual identity of the university. The Graphic Designer assists in the layout and production design of print and digital assets, email marketing materials, reports, presentations and other publications as well as promotional displays, marketing brochures, invitations, and material for website, social media and multimedia projects.
Internal relationships include all teams within the office of University Marketing and University Advancement, as well as partners in Admission, University Communications, Athletics, Arts & Sciences, the Mason School of Business, the Law School, W&M Libraries, the School of Education, and the School of Marine Science and Virginia Institute of Marine Science. External relationships include contact with vendors that specialize in the production of creative and multimedia projects.
The successful Graphic Designer will be a proactive member of University Marketing’s talented and creative team, which includes responsibilities for marketing and branding, strategic events, strategic communications, and project management across three core areas: enrollment, advancement and institutional reputation. The Graphic Designer will be a champion for diversity and equity and will find innovative ways to incorporate diverse perspectives into all aspects of design for University Marketing. This position is based in Williamsburg and is expected to work in the office on campus, eligible to work remotely up to two days per week.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
- Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusiveness, including, but not limited to, collaboration, staffing and programming.
- Portfolio: must submit a portfolio demonstrating a strong creative proficiency in layout and design.
- Knowledge of contemporary design and its role in the development of organizational communications.
- Experience in design, illustration and/or related experience in an agency, corporate or higher education setting (typically 1+ year/s).
- Expertise in the creative use of type, color, illustration and photography as design elements.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (specifically InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Understanding of information design including text formatting, styles, information hierarchy and navigation.
- Knowledge of web design and functionality, specifically, an understanding of how HTML and CSS work, creating site maps, wire framing, building and designing website elements and pages, testing, etc.
- Experience with email and email marketing platforms.
- Experience developing, managing and coordinating presentations materials using software such as Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the proven ability to work collaboratively as a team player as well as develop and foster communication and teamwork with a diverse audience.
Preferred Qualifications
- MFA or advanced degree in Fine Arts, Design, Marketing, Advertising or a related field.
- Experience in design, illustration and/or related experience in an agency, corporate or higher education setting (typically 3-5 years).
- Demonstrated experience with CSS, HTML.
- Hand drawn illustration skills.
- Ability to create artwork that conforms to the style and content specifications provided for given projects.
- Demonstrated high levels of creativity, discretion and independent judgment. Creativity, invention, imagination, originality and talent in all aspects of graphic design.
- Ability to affect, interpret and implement communication plans and strategies.
- Strong illustration skills including effective use of color, perspective and shading.
- Great degree of flexibility, efficiency and initiative in work style, especially under deadline constraints.
- Possession of diplomacy, tact and a sense of humor when working with individuals on and off campus.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, planning, strategic, conceptual, problem-solving and presentation development skills.
- Ability to visually conceptualize data for presentations and other communications.
Advertised Pay Range
$50,000 to $55,000.

- This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Flexibility is required as this position is subject to overtime during high peak times (to include occasional evenings and weekends around university events and deadlines), as directed and approved by the supervisor.
- This position is eligible for a flexible work schedule.
- Must have the flexibility and ability to travel as required.
