Responsibilities


General Purpose:

The Head of Collections & Systems (C&S) selects, acquires, and markets resources and tools that enhance the clinical, curricular, and research missions of University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). This position is responsible for license and price negotiation, vendor relations, collection analysis and assessment, budget management, and resolving e-resource access issues.

The Head of C&S provides guidance and decision support to the director for joint-licensing resources for academic and health system partnerships and works with procurement and legal staff at the URMC and with affiliated hospitals to negotiate pricing and licenses for clinical point-of-care resources integrated into the electronic health record.

The Head of C&S is a member of the libraries’ leadership team. In this role the incumbent provides vision, direction, and leadership within the library, the URMC campus, and the University of Rochester library system as the library redefines its collections and technical services operations in the context of emerging trends in scholarly communication, digital initiatives, shared collections, and the development of next-generation bibliographic and information systems.

Responsibilities:

Leads the discovery, selection, price negotiation, licensing, acquisition, and marketing of library print and electronic collections, and research tools that support the missions of URMC schools, programs, departments, and affiliates.

Manages vendor relationships and negotiates licenses for point-of-care clinical information resources integrated into the electronic health record for the URMC and affiliated hospitals. Coordinates with clinical partners, procurement, legal, privacy, and IT. Manages library service agreements with affiliate hospitals.

Oversees $3.6M library acquisitions budget. Manages general account and endowed collection funds, in accordance with University and library fiscal policies. Compiles and analyzes collection usage data from a variety of sources to support data-driven collection development decisions and comply with university library and national library association statistical reporting requirements.

Works closely with IT, University Libraries, and third party vendors to maximize library systems interoperability and facilitate optimal user experience.

Provide liaison librarian services to assigned URMC departments including expert literature searching, library instruction via research consultations, reference queries, and curriculum integrated classes. Serve as an instructor for Medical Evidence and Inquiry (MEI), a mandatory class for all phase 1 medical students. Contribute to institutional scholarly research output through participation on systematic review terms.

Supervision of department staff. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the work of department staff. Ensure adherence to quality standards, deadlines, and university policies.

Serves on appropriate committees or groups within Miner Libraries, Institute for Innovative Education, University of Rochester, greater-Rochester region, national associations. Contributes to the profession through active participation in conferences, associations, and research.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in library/information science from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited institution, or other advanced degree
  • 2-5 years’ experience as a library professional including at least one year of demonstrated supervisory experience
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems, library collection development practices, library acquisitions, and the academic publishing industry
