The Office of Children’s Affairs (
OCA
) supports Denver Agencies, the community and its service providers in ensuring all children and youth have basic needs met, are ready for kindergarten and have the opportunity to succeed academically and professionally.
Current programs of OCA include the on-going development and implementation of strategies to increase access to nutritious food; high-quality childcare and afterschool programs; early learning and literacy resources; youth transportation, mentorship, cultural experiences and pathways to post-secondary education and careers.

The ECE Program Coordinator position will increase the number of sites participating in Tasty Food as described in OCA’s Healthy Food for Denver Kids’ (
HFDK
) Grant, This will be a full-time, term-limited position. This $1.06M grant is designed to increase city-wide access to healthy meals for Denver’s children and youth, particularly in areas with limited access to food and other resources. There will be a special emphasis in expanding efforts to serve children ages three to five.
Duties include:
  • Work closely with the Tasty Food staff, Grant Manager, SNAP Enrollment Specialist to expand the number of ECE participants across all Tasty Food sites. The Program Coordinator will work with stakeholders within low-income communities to become new Tasty Food sites
  • Identify ECE sites with low-income children, learn the food needs of the children, and work with the staff to explain the various
    CACFP
    and
    SFSP
    , with options available to them
  • Provide hands-on training and technical assistance to any newly established Tasty Food site in an ECE setting. Once a new CACFP and/or SFSP site is established, the ECE Coordinator will train all site staff, engage in weekly tasks to support each site, conduct multiple site visits to ensure program integrity, compliance with all OCA, City, State and Federal guidelines, and implement outreach strategies identified by the Community Engagement Specialist to increase participation for youth ages three through 18.
  • Work an OCA liaison with the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) to identify potential CACFP and/or SFSP sites in need of OCA’s sponsorship, especially in ECE communities most in need of food resources
  • Be responsible for timely completion of tasks and deliverables related to the online portal for each respective state agency, including addition of new sites, changes to meal service, monitoring visits and information required for state review
OCA is seeking an ECE Program Coordinator with high emotional intelligence and interpersonal social skills that include the following:
  • Self-awareness: Ability to recognize and understand how addressing personal emotions and experiences with food insecurity is a critical part of this position, which includes being aware of the effect of our individual actions and behaviors within larger systems
  • Self-regulation: Being aware of your own emotions and the impact you have on others; emotional intelligence requires the ability to regulate and manage emotions when navigating topics related to hunger and structural racism. Self-regulation includes being flexible, adapting well to change, managing conflict and diffusing tense or difficult situations
  • Social Skills: Ability to put information to work in daily interactions and communications, develop a strong rapport with leaders/co-workers and deploy active listening communication skills
  • Empathy: Ability to understand how others are feeling and recognize various emotional states. Being empathetic also means understanding the power dynamics that often influence social relationships and understanding how these forces influence feelings and behaviors in different situations

  • A deep lived or professional experience working in Denver communities. Understanding of social and structural conditions that affect hunger and lead to health inequity
  • Experience working with various stakeholders in a variety of sectors, which may include but are not limited to schools, non-profits, government and businesses. The humility to be driven by community and work for community
  • Experience in anti-hunger initiatives or lived experience with food insecurity
  • Be thoughtful about communicating with varied stakeholders who may need individualized approaches related to their cultural, religious, social characteristics and values

  • Education: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
  • Experience: Five (5) years of technical or administrative experience performing standard research and evaluation, case management, and/or implementing work processes
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of education may be substituted for each required year experience
