POSITION SUMMARY*
East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create an economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities.
East Side House’s Early Childhood programs provide Early Head Start and Head Start services in a safe, supportive, educational environment for children ages 18+ months to 5 years of age. Serving 231 children daily from five locations, the comprehensive program is designed to develop the cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills of children in a safe, supportive environment. Children and families receive a broad range of educational, nutritional, social and preventive health services. Our staff foster partnerships with families so that they can support school learning and achievement as well as advocate for their children and themselves. We expect that all staff will work collaboratively, and with the community, to promote school readiness while creating a safe, healthy and protective environment.
SUMMARY OF JOB: The Health and Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for management of the Child Health, Dental, and Safety and Nutrition service areas for the East Side House Head Start and Early
Head Start services. The Health and Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that Head
Start Programs develop and implement systems and procedures for the delivery of quality health
and nutrition services. The position also ensures compliance with Head Start performance
standards as well as local, state and federal regulations.
Essential Functions:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following key activities

  • Assists with planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating the health and nutrition

service plans, systems and procedures.

  • Develops written health, environmental safety, sanitation, food service and emergency policies and procedures ensuring compliance with local and state regulations, with

appropriate director, consultants, staff, Policy Council, board, HSAC and grantee participation and approval.

  • Ensures compliance with Head Start performance standards as well as other local, state

and federal regulations, to ensure health, health and safety and nutrition standards are met.

  • Contributes to the development of the Program’s Annual Plan, program proposals and Community Assessment, as requested. Monitors and follows upon health and nutrition status of children in the grantee, service systems and outcomes to ensure high quality and individualized services are delivered for children and families.
  • Update Food Allergy List as needed and review for accuracy monthly.
  • Ensure update of Red Binders at each center as needed and review for accuracy monthly.
  • Assurance of data entry into ChildPlus and all PIR health entries are input into ChildPlus.
  • Build alliances with community health and nutrition stakeholders to in order to create

interagency linkages.

  • Provides training and technical assistance to staff based on assessment of health, health

and safety and nutrition service area needs.

  • Has primary responsibility for supervising the Cooks and Health Consultants (Nutritionist, Dietician and Nurse).
  • Lead Health Advisory Board.
  • Review children Immunizations for compliance.
  • Responsible for coordination with Assistant Director of Family services regarding child with food allergies.
  • Ensures follows-up on service area-related recommendations.
  • Monitors health, nutrition, health and safety and dental services and records, including

data at Delegate Partners programs and documents all findings.

  • Disseminates and interprets information to agencies related to changes in nutrition

regulations

  • Organizes and facilitates the activities of the agency's Health Services Advisory Committee (HSAC); ensures that the Committee membership is composed of all required professions and parent representation and that it meets at least twice a year.
  • Conducts regular health coordinator/consultant/designee meetings and trainings with delegate and partner health staff.

Education and Experience:

  • Registered Nurse, preferably pediatric nurse or RN with experience working with young children.
  • 5 years of experience in health/nutrition administration for young children.
  • LPN with 7 years of experience working with young children.
  • Knowledge of young children's food requirements according to Head Start Performance Standards, Health, and Child Care Food Program regulations.

to communicate and respond in a manner that consistently demonstrates respect and
concern.

  • Must have excellent organizational skills and proven ability to work within prescribed

timelines.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to travel to Grantee, Delegate and Partners sites.
  • Intermediate knowledge of computer applications, word-processing software in a
  • Windows environment and ability to learn and master other computer technology

software as needed.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, exempt position. General work schedule for this position is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs. Possible work on weekends, holidays or after work hours for projects, special events, etc. to meet program operational goals.
Remote Work
ESH has determined that up to zero(%) of this position can be remote due to COVID-19. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.
Travel
Travel is primarily during the business day to affiliated programs, agency partners, over site agencies, etc.
