What You'll Be Doing

The Health Promotion Chronic Disease Prevention team seeks a Tobacco Prevention and Control Public Health Educator. The successful candidate will provide tobacco prevention and control policy guidance to an eight county region to help create and strengthen tobacco-free policies.

This role will be responsible for the following:
Aid in the reduction of tobacco and nicotine use while eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke and vapor
Provide technical expertise to an eight county region and its municipalities to incorporate more comprehensive evidence-based tobacco prevention and control strategies that will: help prevent young people from starting to smoke; help adult smokers to quit; educate the public, the media and policymakers about policies that reduce tobacco use and address health disparities
Provide robust and sustainable evidence-based strategies that will positively impact smoking and vaping rates in the region with a focus on youth vaping
Work in tandem with the NCDHHS Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch and Wake County Tobacco Prevention and Control Coordinator

Wake County Health and Human Services (WCHHS) is the consolidation of programs and services that include social services, public health, job search assistance, child support, and transportation. Our mission, in partnership with the community, is to facilitate full access to high quality and effective health and human services for Wake County residents. In addition to our numerous standard programs, Wake County Health and Human Services (WCHHS) is engaged in a number of special initiatives that are impacting services and programs throughout our entire agency. Whether legislated down from the changing regulations on the Federal or State level or bubbling up from the entrepreneurial spirit of our staff, you can always look forward to Wake County Health and Human Services implementing new and exciting enhancements to our services and programs. The mission of the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Section is to provide a set of chronic disease prevention and management services (including screenings) for vulnerable populations within Wake County. The Health Promotion team is made up of a diverse group of health professionals including health educators, registered dietitians and a registered nurse. Health Promotion programs address breast and cervical cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, injury prevention/drug overdose education, addiction treatment & case management, and tobacco prevention. With tobacco use continuing to be the leading cause of preventable death, disease, and disability in North Carolina, this position will work with State, County and Municipal partners to create stronger tobacco-free policies within a 8 county region in effort to reduce the burdens related to tobacco use.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
Bachelor's degree
Two years of job-related experience
Equivalent education and experience are accepted
Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
Experience with policy development
Tobacco prevention and control experience

Hiring Range: $22.90 - $30.91 Commensurate with Experience
