Akron Public Schools is seeking interested and qualified candidates for 1-2 Full Time Hearing Officer for the 2022-2023 school year. Job Title- Hearing Officer
General Statement of Job-
Serves as Hearing officer for the Akron Public Schools, primarily dealing with student and parent appeals of disciplinary action. Reports to the Director, School Climate and Student Services and Security.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions
Receives, reviews, and records suspension letters and appeals regarding long term suspension of students and student assignments; schedules and coordinates the meeting time and place; conducts appeal hearings and approves or denies appeal.
Receives appeals from school principals or other administrator regarding long term suspension and student assignments; organizes information for the appeal hearings; acts as facilitator for the board; presents recommendation to the board if necessary.
Works with the Director, School Climate and Student Services and Security and staff to organize communication with staff and parents.
Additional Job Functions
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in related field with significant public school experience and experience as a school administrator preferred; or any equivalent combination or training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge of school law preferred.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical Requirements- Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines including computers, tape recording devices, facsimile, copiers, etc.
Data Conception- Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, legal and composite characteristics of evidence. Able to correlate facts and evidence in order to make a sound decision.
Interpersonal Communication- Requires ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments to subordinates. Able to develop relationships with all constituents. Able to represent the Akron Public Schools in a professional manner.
Language Ability- Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, manuals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, etc., using prescribed format and conforming to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style. Requires ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence- Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions. Able to interpret school codes of conduct and rules and follow all applicable laws. Able to render decisions based on fact.
Verbal Aptitude- Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including educational and legal terminology.
Interpersonal Temperament- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Physical Communication- Requires the ability to talk and listen. Must be an effective communicator both verbally and in written form.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures as stated in the Akron Board of Education Handbook and policies, including student manuals and handbooks within the school district.
Ability to represent the district in appropriate courts.
Thorough knowledge of laws, principles, policies and procedures related to civil rights and due process.
Thorough knowledge of school system policies and procedures regarding human resources.
Skill in scheduling and coordinating.
Skill as a facilitator
Ability to interpret, develop, evaluate, clarify and apply policies and procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgement in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
Ability to maintain accurate records and to develop meaningful reports.
Ability to use common office machines and computer/programs including word processing, databases, spreadsheets and file maintenance.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
