The Fermilab Accelerator Directorate Target Systems Department seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate candidate to join the High-Power Targetry Research and Development group. The successful candidate will develop novel materials that are tolerant to radiation damage and thermal shock effects for future high-power particle-beam targets. This will involve designing and executing in-beam experiments followed by materials characterization to study the microstructural evolution of irradiated materials. Conventional electron and transmission electron microscopy will be used to probe and quantify radiation-induced defects such as dislocation loops, point defect clusters and void swelling. In addition, changes in bulk thermomechanical properties due to radiation damage will be measured. Emphasis will be placed on developing High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs) and Electrospun Nanofiber materials, specifically for accelerator target applications. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the operation and research of Fermilab beam experiments. The work scope supports a DOE early career research program project where the successful candidate will actively participate in research collaborations with national and international universities and laboratories.

This position is for an appointment of 3 years with the potential of extension.
Relocation will be offered for this appointment.
You Will:
- Participate in the development and fabrication of novel High-Entropy Alloys and Electrospun Nanofiber materials
- Design and execute material irradiation experiments with low-energy ions and intermediate and high-energy protons to replicate prototypic beam conditions of future accelerator target facilities.
- Characterize the bulk property changes and microstructural evolution of the novel materials at Fermilab and other user facilities.
- Collaborate with research groups at other national and international universities and laboratories.
- Attend and participate in related technical conferences and workshops.
- Publish the results of experiments and studies in peer-reviewed journals.
- May supervise engineers and technicians, as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
We Are Looking For:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Accelerator Physics, Material Science and Engineering or a related discipline, with the degree completed by the time of the appointment.
- Knowledge of radiation damage defects and mechanisms in materials.
- Experience with characterizing defects using Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and related techniques (EBSD, diffraction pattern analysis, XRD, EDS).
- Experience with sample preparation techniques for electron microscopy (focused ion beam milling and metallurgical preparation).
- Knowledge of bulk thermal and mechanical property testing.
- Experience with micromechanical testing of materials is desirable (nanoindentation, micro-tensile, micro-cantilever)
- Experience with thermomechanical modeling of materials (ANSYS FEA)
- Experience with beam irradiation experiments is desirable.
- Knowledge of modern Monte Carlo codes for high-energy particle productions and/or radiation transport simulations (e.g. GEANT, MARS, FLUKA, MCNP) is desirable but not required.
- Knowledge of data management techniques and tools is desirable.
- Ability to work effectively with other individuals and within groups of varying composition.
- A record of scientific accomplishments, publications, and other products of research.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including the preparation and delivery of papers, reports, and presentations.
