The Histologist is responsible for the preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist. This includes tissue processing, embedding, cutting, staining, and performing other special procedures such as frozen sections, cytology preparation, and bone marrow collection.

• Performs processing of tissues.
• Embeds, cuts, and stains tissues.
• Performs frozen sections.
• Prepares specimens for cytology screening.
• Assists the pathologist with the collection of bone marrow.
• Maintains the principles of confidentiality. Understands the legal/regulatory requirements related to the release of information. Able to use the information systems pertinent to the job.
• Performs and documents actions taken according to department procedure.
• Displays abilities to utilized knowledge to perform manual techniques for processing specimens.
• Prepares the incoming gross specimens for dissection including logging in, assigning case numbers, and preparing appropriate blocks.
• Chooses proper processing methodology based on specific tests requested.
• Performs proper tissue embedding utilizing correct specimen orientation.
• Sections paraffin embedded tissues in a manner that yields a thinly cut tissue slide, free of artifacts.
• Utilizes proper technique involved in routine H & E stains.
• Performs a variety of special stains as determined by the pathologist.
• Performs frozen sections at NCH and off-site locations according to department procedure. Must be able to provide own transportation when needed.
• Understands correct collection requirements and proper patient preparation.
• Prepares cytology specimens for screening according to department procedure.
• Assists the pathologist with the collection of bone marrow specimens.
• Ensures 100% accurate patient identification of all patients and laboratory specimens.
• Accurately carries out requests for laboratory testing appropriate to job level. Utilizes laboratory computer system, hospital computer system, MyNCH, and other computer systems appropriate to job level.
• Understands scope of laboratory services appropriate to job level.
• Assists hospital staff by being a knowledgeable reference for specimens and tests provided by the laboratory.
• Understands departmental procedures for reporting patient results and maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Is flexible in scheduling to meet department needs.
• Actively assists and supports departmental activities to ensure that operational and salary expenses are equal to or less than approved budget.
• Understands the principles and concepts of Performance Improvement. Looks for opportunities and solutions for process improvements and seeks to improve job skills.
• Reviews and acts on reports as required by position.

• Minimum of Associate’s Degree required.
• Minimum of 3 months of experience required.
• Licensed as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) in the State of Florida.
