Accepts specimens into Central Processing area. Verifies receipt of specimens; and labels and prepares the samples for testing. Sorts samples based on priority of testing and routes routine samples to Core Lab, Reference Lab and Rapid Response Lab, as directed. Registers patients, orders tests for certain predefined patient types (PST, etc.). Performs additional related duties (charting, statistics, charges, etc.).
Job Responsibility
- Verifies the receipt of specimens delivered to Central Processing area and specimens picked up by the staff on rounds.
- Ensures each specimen corresponds to label and order number.
- Identifies specimens which need special handling.
- Positions tubes into centrifuge (when needed), separates and aliquots samples; saves specimen samples to be tested at a later time.
- Sorts specimens and labels for STAT, Core Lab and/or Reference Lab processing and routes in a timely manner.
- Ensures the centrifuge is balanced and set at proper speed, temperature and time.
- Separates serum from cells.
- Identifies each aliquot and saved specimen with name, number, date, test, precautions and special handling.
- Maintains a clean, neat and organized work area.
- Delivers specimens from Central Processing to various sections of the RRL, Core Lab etc.
- Delivers and routes specimens with labels.
- Maintains a clean, neat and organized work area
- Performs related duties, as required.

Job Qualification
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- Proficiency in Medical Terminology, required.
- Working knowledge of PC applications, required.
- Laboratory experience in a hospital setting, preferred.
- Computer literate.
