Capital Digestive Care Laboratory is the largest specialty laboratory in the Mid-Atlantic states. With a focus on gastroenterology, the laboratory provides services to 30+ office and ASC locations with a growing number of referring provider offices. We are currently seeking to add a new night shift histology superversor to our burgeoning team of skilled laboratory scientists to assist with our ever-expanding growth. Performs all aspects of routine histology that may include: Microtomy, Embedding, Grossing, Immunohistochemistry, Special Stains, and Non-GYN specimen preparation.
Provides day to day supervision to maximize efficiency, quality, and productivity. Provides supervision of specimen preparation, cutting, staining and special test performance by histotechs. Supervises, monitors and/or distributes work as required to maximize efficiency and avoid overtime. Makes recommendation to avoid the use of overtime. Supervises workflow to achieve/maintain stated turnaround time goals. Monitors specimen handling and identification within the section. Documents all steps taken to correct problem. Identifies instrument or procedural problems, makes assessment, and takes action as necessary and documents accordingly.
Education:
Requires a minimum Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health, Biology, or related field. Coursework must include at least 60 semester hours, 12 hours of biology and chemistry (combination of both). Completion of NAACLS accredited Histology program or program that grants HT certification eligibility
Licensure/Certifications:
HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) is required
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a histology technician in a clinical setting is required. A clinical internship as a part of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program will be counted as one year of clinical experience.
Job Functions:
Job Functions include but are not limited to the following.
· Performs technical services and operations for the preparation of surgical and cytology specimens, which ensures accurate identification of these specimens.
· Performs all related pre-analytic functions, specimen handling protocols and documentation of all related tasks.
· Evaluates normal and abnormal tissue components; grosses, orients and embeds tissue specimens correctly for microscopic examination.
· Cuts, stains, mounts, and coverslips specimens of human tissue.
· Prepares paraffin sections of tissues.
· Recognizes technical problems related to tissue embedding and sectioning; takes appropriate corrective actions to assure superlative tissue sections.
· Prepares and evaluates the adequacy of solutions and stains used in the laboratory.
· Performs routine H&E stains, special histochemical stains, immunohistochemical stains, and in situ hybridization slides on surgical case material.
· Assists in the development and introduction of new immunohistochemical stains and in situ hybridization staining procedures to include validation studies, assessment of the adequacy of the control slides, and writing the new procedures for inclusion in the procedure manual.
· Recognizes factors that affect staining results; assesses the adequacy of staining and sectioning by review and assessment of the slides; takes corrective action to improve stain results when necessary.
· Performs, evaluates, and documents quality control slides and procedures for all types of staining procedures.
· Troubleshoots problems with instrumentation and performs routine maintenance on the equipment as defined by the manufacturer and outlined in the procedure manual.
· Troubleshoots assays and all related instrumentation.
· Maintains equipment quality control and preventive maintenance records with respect to all tasks to which he/she is assigned.
· Documents all quality occurrences in compliance with departmental Quality Plan; assists in documentation of all quality occurrences; and initiates corrective action for QC and QA problems.
· Assists in the preparation of the Histology Laboratory for inspection by all regulatory agencies, including the Department of Health, the College of American Pathologists, and all other accrediting bodies.
· Performs chemical hazardous waste disposal according to current departmental operating policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
· Assists in the resolution of technical problems in the histology laboratory.
· Responsible for training new staff in laboratory procedures related to histology, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization.
· Investigates and works towards the resolution of missing specimens, blocks, slides, etc.
· Assigns work to team members and ensures the work is completed.
· Assists in duties as deemed necessary by the Histology Manager.
· Adheres to the customer service standards of the department and organization.
· Keeps abreast of current developments in the field of immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and histotechnology.
· Participates in activities that promote adherence to state & federal healthcare program requirements.
· Adheres to the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Policies and Procedures.
· Maintains confidentiality of patients and staff.
· Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
· Knowledge of histologic principles sufficient to determine best method of tissue preparation.
· Knowledge of histologic stains, preparation, properties and characteristics.
· Knowledge of tissue embedding principles and techniques with the ability to apply them.
· Basic knowledge of pathology information systems and computerized instruments.
· Knowledge of processing tissue for microscopic examination and evaluation by a pathologist.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Ability to work safely with infectious material and/or hazardous material.
· Must be willing and able to work flexible shifts including weekends and holidays.
· Ability to promote, establish, and maintain harmonious and effective work relations with staff, vendors, and other personnel throughout the organization.
· Effectively communicate with management and other personnel. Must also be able to effectively communicate via telephone and e-mail.
· Reads and follows Standard Operating Procedures while performing assays in the laboratory.
· Performs CAP survey samples and other proficiency testing in the same manner as patient tests.
· Keeps accurate documentation of all QC, temperature monitoring, maintenance, etc.
· Identify, diagnose, and troubleshoot issues that may arise with laboratory results and instrumentation.
· Determines validity of specimens and documents all pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical errors.
· Takes weekly inventory and orders necessary reagents and supplies for the laboratory operations.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Works under the Histology Manager & Director of Anatomic Pathology Operations.
