Public Health Department: Homemaker

Public Health has an opening for a part-time Homemaker. Duties for the Homemaker include: housecleaning, laundry and grocery shopping services in client homes. Positions are hourly with no guarantee of hours; hours vary depending on caseload and flexible scheduling; daytime Monday thru Friday (no weekends or holidays).

Essential Functions

  • Provides general housekeeping tasks including dusting, vacuuming, washing windows, mopping floors, cleaning sinks, bathtubs, showers or toilets, changing bed linens, laundering linens and personal clothing, emptying trash, cleaning closets, cupboards, stove and refrigerator.
  • Shops for groceries; plans and prepares meals including those requiring special diets.
  • Reports changes in observed needs or condition.
  • Assists with keeping accurate records.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of basic home care methods; general knowledge of home care processes and policies; general skill using standard household items and materials; general skill using standard household appliances; general skill using standard home care equipment; general skill maintaining records and reports of services provided; general skill communicating with others; ability to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to read and carry out detailed instructions; ability to work with older adults; ability to work with people from all socio-economic levels; ability to carry out home care in the home of a client and perform housekeeper duties; ability to practice sound hygiene and sanitation techniques; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and associates.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires sitting, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, exposure to untamed animals and exposure to communicable diseases; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Special Requirements

  • Applicable training to obtain and maintain certifications will be provided.
  • Ability to maintain certifications through ongoing education.
  • Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.

Other Requirements

  • The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13. If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.
