Description

The Town of Garner Information Technology Department is seeking a Systems Specialist to join the team. This position will perform technical work with computer hardware installation, maintenance and repair; install, monitor, and troubleshoot computer software; provide user device and application support; serve as a backup to other IT employees. Work is performed independently with minimal supervision. This is the first level of a three-level IT career ladder.

This work requires the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and /or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to noise.

Examples of Duties

Supports the Information Technology Department by assisting with the installation, repairing and monitoring of town-wide systems and infrastructure, Town initiatives and projects.


  • Provides non-critical support for the following systems and applications.
    • Printing (Windows Printer Server 2012 r2, Kyocera Document Solutions)
    • Document scanning (Laserfiche)
    • Storage and file shares (Pure Storage, SMB)
    • User device and application support. (PC, Laptop, Tablet)
    • User access (Active Directory, Azure)
    • Web\cloud and on-premise applications (Office 365, Adobe, ArcGIS, Munis)
    • Access control(C-Cure9000)
    • Unified communications (Cisco Unity, Call Manager)
    • Security cameras (ExacqVision)
    • Audio visual (Crestron, Air media)
    • Inventory (Lansweeper)
    • Virtual infrastructure (UCS, VMware)
    • Service desk. (Lansweeper)
  • Monitors
    • Backup jobs (Barracuda, Western Digital, FTP)
    • System and network connectivity (Windows, Cisco L2 and L3)
    • Network security (FortiGate, FortiClient)
    • Systems health. (Lansweeper, SNMP)
  • Serves as the initial point of contact for service desk tickets and escalates as needed based on severity.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to an associate's degree with an emphasis in computer technology or related field as well as experience with computer networking, telecommunications, hardware and software support.

Preferred Qualifications:
Microsoft, Cisco, and/or CompTIA certifications

Applicants must:
  • have advanced knowledge in the operation of networking and telecommunications equipment;
  • have advanced knowledge of PC/laptop installation and repair;
  • have thorough knowledge of Active Directory;
  • have ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions;
  • have ability to install and configure networking hardware and software;
  • be skilled in the use of data processing equipment;
  • have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

The salary range shown is the career salary range. The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
