INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT – NURSING
UNIT: OPAP
DEPARTMENT: Nursing
Salary Range: $ 42,000- $48,000
Definition
The Instructional Assistant is responsible for the Nursing Skills Laboratory and Nursing Simulation Laboratory and assists students to improve their knowledge of nursing and skill in performing clinical procedures associated with the treatment and care of obstetrical, psychiatric, surgical, and acutely ill medical patients.
Duties
1. Assists students with skill practice.
2. Sets up supplies and equipment and assists in conducting classroom demonstrations.
3. Serves as a resource to students and instructional staff during laboratory sessions.
4. Explains to students established instructional laboratory and equipment policies and ensures student compliance with lab policies, procedures, and safety precautions.
5. Advises instructional faculty of common problems encountered and progress being made by students using a laboratory as part of their educational program.
6. Assists students in the operation of a wide variety of instructional media equipment and related hardware, including Patient Care Simulators.
7. Assists with preparation and set-up of simulated situations for evaluation of student skills.
8. Maintains and makes minor adjustments and repairs to instructional media, manikins, and hospital equipment.
9. Maintains, cleans, and organizes laboratory supplies, laundry, and equipment.
10. Maintains records of supplies and equipment.
11. Receives, inspects, sets-up, stores, and secures supplies and equipment and keeps storage and working areas orderly and clean.
12. Conducts and maintains syringe and needle counts according to state regulations.
13. Seeks and coordinates vendors for maintenance and repair of equipment.
14. May provide training and work direction to student employees.
15. May be assigned to perform other duties in the Nursing Department during peak workload periods and in the absence of staff.
16. Performs related duties as assigned.
17. Attends department and college wide meetings and workshops.
Supervision
General supervision is received from the Department Chair. Functional supervision is received from the Nursing Skills Laboratory Lead Instructor(s). Work direction may be provided to clerical staff and student employees.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse with 1-2 years clinical experience; currently licensed by New York State
Preferred: Registered Nurse with bachelor's degree in nursing or in the process of completing.
Knowledge of:
Current concepts, principles, and practices of nursing, clinical procedures associated with the treatment and care of obstetrical, surgical, psychiatric, and acutely ill medical patients
Basic anatomy and physiology
Medical terminology
Capabilities and features of multimedia equipment used in nursing laboratory
Specialized computer software used in the nursing and allied health professions
Capabilities of computer systems, software, and hardware common to instructional laboratories
Recordkeeping procedures
Skill in: Operating a wide variety of hospital equipment and simulation equipment
Ability to: Work effectively, cooperatively, and collaboratively with nursing faculty, staff and students
Reinforce instruction of nursing concepts, practices and procedures to students
Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines
Effectively utilize computer hardware and software
Follow complex instructions and procedures
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Take initiative and work independently
Give clear and concise instructions
Keep detailed and accurate records
Learn to operate and educate students in the operation of media equipment found in an instructional laboratory
Learn patient simulator technologies and applications
