JOBThe Adapted Recreation program, through Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation is seeking to increase and expand program offerings. We are seeking enthusiastic instructors who offer unique programming opportunities for people with a variety of learning needs. Instructors would teach classes for people with various needs that makes it difficult to enjoy typical classes. You should have expertise in a particular activity area and experience working with a population such as people with developmental disabilities, veterans; those with mental health disabilities; people with visual or auditory impairments. Subject matter could be yoga, exercise, cooking, dancing, music, or other leisure-time activities, appropriate for children or adults.Instructors can be: Contractors would need to provide their own current valid insurances for the duration of the classes. They would make a percentage of the gross registration fees.Temporary employees would be covered under the town’s insurance would make a set rate for teaching, based on experience.Position may be designated as Instructor II based upon qualifications and experience.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Communicate effectively with parents, staff, community partners, and other outside liaisons prior to and throughout the weeks of the class. Oversee the health and safety of all participants in class. Provide direct support to participants with disabilities. Types of support may include communication support, behavior support, mobility support, etc. Observe participants in programs to determine needs for safety considerations, social engagement coaching, understanding of boundaries, activity and program rules, schedules, etc. Implement individual adaptations to support each participant. These classes take flexibility on the part of the instructor. Manage classroom in terms of behavior, participation, social interaction, clean up, etc.Write reports in detail on any behavioral incidents and communicate with related parties, following up with corrective actions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowlege of: Principles, techniques, and materials associated with teaching in a community-based program for people with and without disabilitiesThe role of leisure education for children and other people with disabilities in community-based settingsThe rules and equipment, including adaptive/assistive devices, for activities associated with class to be taughtAbility to: Assist in planning and organizing, classes, programs or events for specific age groupsTeaching a group of individuals, including communication and time managementUnderstand and follows written and oral instructionsAbility to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalentModel behaviors that are consistent with our values of RESPECTExperienceExperience sufficient to understand the work with special needs populations, usually associated with six months to two years experience or service in a community based class settingExperience planning and coordinating recreation-oriented classes or programs for individuals with disabilities.Demonstrated ability and/or aptitude, and orientation toward instructing particular classesMust be twenty-one (21) years of ageMust have a background in Developmental Disabilities, Special Education Recreation Therapy, etc. At least 2-3 years of experience teaching the recreation subject and experience working with a variety of people with special needs. Ages of the students could be: Age 2-5 with parentAges 5 – 12 13-1718-2521+Candidates must : Be highly organized with attention to detail Have strong interpersonal and communication skills Be able to work independently and with teamsComplete and turn in attendance sheets and staff timesheet when dueCertificationsPossession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated with a satisfactory driving record for the past seven years.First Aid, CPR, AEDRevised: May 12, 2022
