The journalism and editing supervisor is responsible for supervising the production of professional media for the College of Humanities departments and organizations. This position makes you a key member of the Digital Media and Communications team (DMaC) of the College of Humanities. The ideal candidate will have training in commercial, journalistic, or feature writing with experience in editing and graphic design, as well as leading teams and supervising content development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating closely with the DMaC manager, writing team, and the art, graphic design, and digital media specialists to assist in all aspects of the strategy, planning, and development of DMaC messaging
  • Training a team of student writers in investigative journalism and digital content development to write, edit, and publish web articles, PR and marketing materials (such as booklets, brochures, and posters), and social media, in a tone, voice, and style consistent with DMaC principles
  • Supervising the planning, writing, and editing of the Humanities alumni magazine, a 28-page (sometimes 36-page) semiannual professional publication that has a circulation of 32,000 hardcopy and 20,000 electronic copies per issue
  • Supporting the DMaC Digital Media and Public Relations Assistant Manager with marketing and design strategy
  • Completing edits on stories, marketing materials, programs, and reports produced by students, faculty, staff, and alumni
  • Meeting and collaborating with faculty and administrative staff to create effective messages to publicize Humanities events and academic offerings

Qualifications

Minimum education/experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, professional writing, English, or related field of study AND two years of work experience (part-time is acceptable)

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in journalism, communications, professional writing, English, or related field of study AND two years of professional experience

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

Required:

  • Superior communications and writing skills
  • Capable of creating promotional materials that can be utilized in various platforms (print, web, digital signage, multimedia, and social media)
  • Leadership skills to collaborate with departments, teams, and committees in the execution of communication strategy
  • Teaching, mentoring, or training
  • Solid editorial skills
  • Excellent management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Self-motivated and creative
  • Ability to manage student employees
  • Collaborative work style

Preferred:

  • Experience in magazine development with an emphasis on writing and editing
  • InDesign experience laying out magazines
  • Photoshop and Illustrator
  • After Effects, Premiere, or Final Cut Pro

Portfolio management software such as Airtable, Basecamp, Asana, etc.


Employee Class:
3/4 Time (28 hour)

Work Location: Provo Campus

Approximate Starting Salary: $24.50 - $31.80 per hour DOQ
