KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx. Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college and beyond – and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students. Today, our New York City network is comprised of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 9,350 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 850. KIPP NYC is continuing to grow and opened two new middle schools and an elementary school August 2021!


Job Description


Position Overview

The KIPP NYC Controller is an essential leadership role on the KIPP NYC Finance Team, serving as the leader of the Accounting team, while ensuring strong financial controls and accounting. The Controller will partner closely with FP&A and other regional teams throughout KIPP NYC. The Controller is the ideal position for a detailed-oriented senior accounting professional with strong leadership skills and a desire to build and improve existing processes and systems. The Controller will report directly to the KIPP NYC Chief Financial Officer.

This role is based out of our office in midtown Manhattan, with an option for a hybrid schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Day-to-Day Operations

  • Oversee and manage all accounting of KIPP NYC, including general ledger, organization cash flow, payables, billing, receivables, credit card accounts and accounting, including bond and lease accounting

Fiscal Compliance & Reporting

  • Manage audits for all entities, including, but not limited to, delivering financials, managing deadlines, and preparing schedules, and managing relationships with auditors
  • Manage annual IRS 990 filings and other government tax and payroll reporting for all entities
  • Ensure compliance with government and private grant requirements
  • Prepare timely and accurate internal and external financial reports to support operating decision-making

Internal Controls and Fiscal Policies & Procedures

  • Implement, maintain and enhance strong accounting process and control systems ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations

Stakeholder Management & Development

  • Manage team of 9 accounting staff; provide team with coaching, regular feedback, professional development, and training to drive team and individual performance goals
  • Create a positive work environment with high employee engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with teams across the organization, partner closely with FP&A, including training on fiscal policies

Systems & Processes

  • Enhance use of accounting software and integration of software into accounting processes, to increase efficiency of accounting processes while maintaining controls.

Qualifications
  • BA/BS or MS in Accounting or related field required; CPA highly preferred
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience, including 5+ years in a non-profit accounting function and 5 years leading a diverse team. Public accounting and/or non-profit accounting expertise required.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software and emerging technology. Proficiency in Abila (Sage MIP Fund 100) accounting software preferred.
  • Knowledge of current accounting best practices, including fund accounting, as well as experience with accounting process improvement in Procure to Pay, Closing the Books
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships with multiple stakeholders across the organization
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment with the handling of highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated passion for and a commitment to the KIPPNYC mission for high quality public education and social justice for all.

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $180,000 - $220,000. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band.
