Overview:
KPBS TV/FM and kpbs.org, San Diego’s public media platforms, are licensed to San Diego State University. The function of the Development Division at KPBS is to manage and increase all aspects of major gifts, Campaign gifts, planned gifts, endowment gifts, and annual membership of the Producers Club to the Station. Additionally, the Development Division plays a key role in raising awareness of its programming and activities throughout the community
The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) will be involved in all aspects of major gift fundraising for the station. Primary responsibilities include acquiring and upgrading Producers Club members, as well as securing major, campaign, and planned gifts.
This position will play a key role as KPBS embarks on several campaigns that will lay the foundation for the organization’s future success. The campaigns will focus on capital improvements related to facilities and technology, endowment and sustainability, estate and planned gifts.
Responsible for securing face-to-face donor visits, writing cases for support, proposals and gift solicitations, and to follow up and insure that gifts and grants received are appropriately recognized and meet requirements. The position will share in the financial goals for the Major Gifts team and will mentor and supervise some of the Development staff. Additionally, the person will work with various departments and staff to develop and produce on-air spots; attend and participate in departmental and station events in addition to donor cultivation events; represent the station at major social events that KPBS co-sponsors.

The MGO will secure gifts of $10,000 a year or more from individual, family and private foundations. The successful candidate in this position will work with our Producers Club members and other prospects to identify, cultivate, and solicit individuals for renewals, upgrades and major gifts. The MGO will identify new opportunities to engage with KPBS Producers Club members and major donor prospects. The MGO will also identify prospects for planned gifts.

The following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbents in this position and is not all-inclusive. Fundraising (80%)
- Serve as front line fundraiser with a portfolio of 150+ individuals and foundations for annual and multi-year gifts of $10,000 or more; initiating and stewarding key funding relationships; and serving as resident “expert” on those donors and first point of contact.
- Increase the number of mid-level donors and upgrade the giving levels of existing donors participating in the Producers Club and general membership.
- Identify and strategically cultivate and solicit donors and prospects with a focus on expanding donor relationships.
- Plan, schedule and secure face-to-face meetings, station tours, and small salon events.
Grant Writing & Administrative Functions (10%)
- Write high level gift and grant proposals, reports, and correspondence for prospective donors, including stewardship communications, renewal letters, and other donor communications.
- Establish strong relationships and lines of communication with staff from Membership, Development, Grants, News and Programming staff, working together to create accurate and informative messaging, in order to increase donor awareness of key initiatives.
- Work with and lead volunteers to meet goals outlined in the department’s strategic plan.
- Perform other special projects as requested by the Associate General Manager for Development and Grants, and the Director of Development.
- Represent the station at major social events that KPBS co-sponsors.
- Assist with the execution of additional cultivation and stewardship events and activities that serve to advance donor engagement and deepen investment in the station’s work.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education & Experience Qualifications
- 3 years of progressively more difficult administrative or professional work-related experience
- Previous supervisory experience in a team atmosphere or demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Applicable certificates or advanced degree in a related field.
- Demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money.
- A thorough understanding of legal and tax issues involved in not-for-profit giving, including corporate and deferred contributions.
