Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager (Lab Manager), the majority of the Laboratory Assistant’s (Lab Assistant) efforts will be focused on inventory and data projects of the specimens/collections housed in the UCSF RBR including the specimens stored at room & ultralow temperature conditions. The Lab Assistant will be expected to maintain accurate specimen inventory and mapping during re-inventory processes and to keep electronic records up to date for the UCSF RBR. In addition, the Lab Assistant will participate in activities related to the migration of the inventory data into the new ACSR Freezerworks and REDCap databases. The Lab Assistant will also assist with conducting daily freezer checks and monitor freezer temperatures in different locations throughout the ZSFG campus and Oyster Point freezer farm. They will assist the Staff Research Associate (SRA) in activities related to the fulfilment of sample requests from the ACSR’s Letter of Intent process including locating, retrieving, preparing, shipping and updating the inventory logs/database for specimens requested by approved investigators. The Lab Assistant may also work with the Lab Manager and staff on biobanking biospecimen science projects conducted to evaluate the fitness of archival samples for research using contemporary technologies and platforms. The Lab Assistant will be expected to attend lab meetings.

The Lab Assistant will be trained using best practices for the handling, processing, storing and shipping of human biospecimens for future research. The Lab Assistant will also receive specimen database training to ensure accurate data entry into the Freezerworks and REDCap databases.

Department Description

The McGrath Laboratory is one of the basic science research components of the UCSF Hematology-Oncology Division at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), a division of the Department of Medicine with a broad range of patient care, teaching, research and public service responsibilities. A major program under the McGrath Laboratory is the UCSF AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource (UCSF ACSR) Regional Biospecimen Repository (RBR), which was established by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to encourage and facilitate research on HIV and associated diseases in persons living with HIV (PLWH). It is the country’s leading resource for well annotated tissue and biological human samples to support investigators conducting HIV-related research including cancer, virology, immunology, pathology, epidemiology, tumor biology, and assay development. The UCSF-ACSR RBR is a repository for HIV-infected human materials from a wide spectrum of diseases, and conditions in PLWH, including cancer. In addition to operating a large biospecimen repository, the ACSR, upon request will search for and acquire specimens not currently in its inventory to meet the needs of approved investigations. In addition to UCSF, ACSR sites include Baylor College of Medicine, George Washington University, Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, University of Stellenbosch, the University of Sāo Paulo and several affiliate sites.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduation and two years of laboratory experience, or two years of college, including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Flexible and motivated individual with initiative, excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize daily activities; the individual should be highly motivated and detail-oriented as well as a strong team player; strong organizational and problem-solving skills in a results and deadline-oriented environment; able to meet deadlines and work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Working knowledge of the internet; experience with excel data formatting and organization. Experience in REDCap and laboratory inventory management system software a plus
  • Good time management and excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact confidently, professionally and effectively with peers, supervisors, faculty, vendors and investigators.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and willingness to navigate cultural differences with sensitivity and support of a diverse and inclusive teamwork environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in biobanking or biorepository sciences
  • Experience processing HIV/AIDS blood specimens
  • Experience with multi-user, ultra-low temperature storage facilities
  • HIPAA training
  • Demonstrated ability to work under time pressure with attention to detail
  • Experience working with inventory management system software and REDCap
