Job description
Position Purpose
Responsible for performing various technical and non-technical tasks in a hospital and non-hospital based laboratory or office setting, including all aspects of specimen collection and registration of patients into hospital information system.
Obtains blood and other specimens for laboratory testing according to physician orders considering age specific, developmental, and cultural needs. Demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies (see Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing addendums for competency details). Labels specimens for transport to Laboratory for analysis. Performs specimen processing, distribution, tracking and computer order entry.
Tracks specimens through appropriate computer functions to ensure that all specimens are routed accurately and in a timely manner.
Works across at least 2 of the following 3 competencies on a consistent basis (Phlebotomy, Patient/Specimen Registration, and Specimen Processing)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs all job functions of a Lab Tech I on an as needed basis.
Acts as a representative of the department, communicating with patients, patient care units, and physician offices.
Understands and supports the Mission, Vision and Guiding Behaviors of SJMHS and the Department regarding commitment to quality patient care.
Provides quality patient care.
Responds to inquiries in a courteous and helpful manner following departmental policies, procedures and systems.
Uses good judgment to decide when to contact a technologist, manager, or a pathologist as necessary.
Knowledge of reference sources for patient preparation and specimen collection and handling requirements to be able to assist other health care professionals.
Understands laboratory requisitions and how to locate missing or incomplete information.
Must be able to work minimal supervision.
Receives orders from Power Chart. Troubleshoots problems related to missing specimens, discrepancies between specimens and orders.
Performs Laboratory Information System (LIS) standard order entry including, Employee Health, Outpatient, and Body Fluid Exposure testing.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
High school diploma or GED. A minimum of one year of related experience or completion of phlebotomy, medical assistant or patient care technician program required.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read physician orders and verify patient identification, to write in order to maintain logs and records, and to understand and follow written and verbal instructions Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients and other health care professionals. Analytical skills necessary to select the best site for obtaining blood Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities. Organizational skills necessary to prioritize work. Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups. Knowledge of medical terminology desirable. Familiarity with common medical billing procedures desirable.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Current Heart Saver (HS) certification. Phlebotomy Certification preferred.

Pay: $11.00 - $37.41 per hour
