JOB SUMMARY:
The Medical Laboratory Assistant I works within the scope of laboratory services in the clinical laboratory. This position has primary responsibility as a phlebotomist and is responsible for collecting patient specimens required for lab tests ordered by referring practitioners. A Medical Laboratory Assistant I is expected to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality in all areas involving patients, and their related hospital business. Conducts hospital business in an ethical and lawful manner, and is willing to report any knowledge of real or potential fraud or abuse according to the NIH Compliance Code of Conduct. Abides by the NIHD Personnel Policies and Procedures.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
- Directly responsible to Assistant Manager of Laboratory Services.
- This position may also take direction from the Diagnostic Services through a reporting relationship to Assistant Manager then Manager of laboratory services.
- Works closely with hospital district leadership and departments as well as internal and external customers.
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS:
Works in the general hospital setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Graduate or completion of GED
- Valid California Phlebotomy Technician Certificate
- BLS (Basic Lifesaving/CPR Certification) within 6 months of hire.
- Graduate from phlebotomy training program during the previous 12 months is preferred.
