Laboratory Glassware Washer and Media Preparer

The Department of Biology is seeking an on-call glassware washer to provide support to the

Biology research labs. Duties will include washing of glassware including beakers, flasks, tubes, funnels and cylinders. Washing methods may vary including, hand washing, machine washing, boiling, and autoclaving. Media preparation includes mixing chemicals, autoclaving, and pouring into defined containers. Some familiarity with a laboratory environment is highly desired. Training will be provided to perform the work. Schedules will vary based on needs of labs and advance notice will be given. There may be periods of decreased laboratory activity throughout the year. An ideal candidate will have a flexible schedule and open avaialbilty.

Job Responsibilities:

Wash laboratory glassware and maintain cleanliness of laboratory and equipment. ln addition, the employee may perform incidentalfunctions of Laboratory Assistants. Work is initially done under direct supervision and then periodically spotchecked.

Core Duties:

· Wash laboratory glassware using a variety of methods: handwashing, machine washing, boiling, autoclaving, etc.

· Prepare growth media by mixing reagents according to recipe, sterilize by autoclaving, and pouring into designated vessels.

· Perform miscellaneous laboratory duties such as cleaning of apparatus and equipment, general clean-up of laboratory, sterilizing media, reagents, instruments, etc.

· May perforrn incidentalfunctions of the LaboratoryAssistant l.

· Adhere to safety rules,

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

Some familiarity with a laboratory environment is helpful but not required. Training will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Ability to precisely follow detailed oral and/or written instructions

· Manual dexterity sufficient to perform the characteristic duties

· Habits of cleanliness and neatness

· Demonstrated punctuality and consistent attendance

Physical Requirements :

· Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.

· Write by hand, /file sort papenwork

· Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines

· Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.

· Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.

Rarely help move heavier items (e.9. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies;

drums containing 2to 15 gallons, depending on ability.

ln some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds

Working Conditions:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, employees may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective

Equipment (PPE) if required.

Work Standards:

When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and

Stanford University driving requirements.

Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
