Job Description:
The Laboratory Manager ("Manager" here on) will be expected to bring together their managerial skills and knowledge of laboratory safety and procedures to facilitate the smooth operation of the lab. They will maintain the laboratory to facilitate overall research, be capable of helping project teams reach milestones and troubleshoot project obstacles. The Manager will foster the on-site collaborative environment with team leads on projects and facilitate direct communication of success metrics and potential project delays to the PI.

Additionally, the Manager will work closely with the "Laboratory Coordinator" in day-to-day laboratory maintenance and efficiency including ordering & maintaining supplies, managing inventory, maintenance of scientific equipment, and organizational and clerical support tasks.

Education and Experience:
A successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or other relevant Science with three to five years of experience with laboratory instrumentation or a master's degree in one of the previously stated fields of study with one to two years of experience in a laboratory setting. Experience with team management, team building, collaboration, problem solving, and departmental organization is preferred. Experience with general lab techniques, proficient computer skills, and the ability to work safely and maintain a safe, organized, and clean environment required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Individuals must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions may be performed, with or without, reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Oversee and manage daily operations of R&D projects
Strategically plan project milestone timelines and budgets
Developing and maintaining positive relationships with research teams creating an environment of innovation, collaboration, and progress
Increase lab efficiency and productivity
Effectively communicate project status to senior leadership
Conduct project level scenario planning and risk analysis and mitigation strategies
Lab preparation and training of students with supervision of student experimental and overall performance
Produce, maintain and organize documents, drafts and reports, photocopy, fax, etc.
Help prepare reports, presentations, and data for both an academic and industry-based audience
Maintain laboratory supplies equipment, troubleshoot breakdowns, maintain supplies, and perform preventive maintenance when necessary
Maintain laboratory inventory and important documents and information by keeping daily logs and equipment record books
Provision of technical support for the purchase of new laboratory equipment and software, and recommendations for replacement of laboratory equipment
Other duties may be assigned by the Supervisor

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Position requires be able to work with complex laboratory equipment and computer programs used to perform experiments. The appointed individual must have compassion when working with students and help train students and other scientists from diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Relevant experiences in assay development, medical diagnostics, or biosensors with sound operational knowledge of the broader R&D processes
Experience with project management approaches and tools, project planning, timeline, and budget management
Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes
Proven track record leading multi-functional teams and the ability to lead through influence to drive team projects forward
Self-Motivated
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
Creative problem solver
Able to manage multiple priorities concurrently
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
In depth attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team and matrix environment, as well as with external partners and vendors
PMP certification is a plus
Possesses detailed knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
2+ years team leadership experiences
Dexterity, particularly when working with small vials, test tubes, cell culture media, and delicate lab equipment
Commitment and stamina to work long days on your feet, sometimes hunched over a workstation for long periods of time
Provide effective leadership in the laboratory with excellent organization and communication skills

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time, particularly related to the use of a computer. Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.

Ability to drive locally and travel by airplane nationally. Occasionally, will be required to stand for prolonged periods of time at activities/events on and off-campus.

Hours & Classification: This is a temporary, full time, nonexempt position. Normal working hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. This position is for a maximum of 40 hours per week, days are flexible. Attendance required at some evening and/or weekend events.
