Position Summary
Performs water and wastewater laboratory analysis in accordance with State and Federal guidelines. Prepares reports and documentation as required.

Work Hours: Sunday-Thursday work schedule

Essential Functions

• Performs various laboratory tests and analyses necessary for efficient operation of the water and wastewater treatment plants including pH, alkalinity, total hardness, calcium, jar test, chlorine demand, fecal coliform analysis, microbiological examination of water, algae identification, laboratory certification testing, standard plate counts, sterility and productivity testing, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, chlorine residuals, dissolved oxygen and sludge analysis.
• Performs laboratory procedures necessary to ensure laboratory quality control.
• Maintains laboratory records including log books, bench sheets, charts, and test reports.
• Collects water distribution, taste and odor and special samples.
• Responds to public questions and complaints regarding water testing and water quality.
• Maintains glassware, sample containers, and equipment in good operating condition.
• Evaluates laboratory test results.
• Prepares adequate documentation for future reference.
• Practices good laboratory housekeeping.
• Operates in accordance with laboratory safety procedures and regulations at all times.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Associate’s degree in related field required or a combination of formal training and experience equivalent to two years of college. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience

• *1 year of laboratory experience required.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

Knowledge of and ability to apply chemistry, biology and mathematical principles.

• Knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures.
• Knowledge of basic water and wastewater treatment processes preferred.
• Knowledge of NELAP requirements and Quality Control and Quality Assurance practices.
• Knowledge and ability to apply safety procedures in the use of chemicals and laboratory equipment.

Ability to:

• Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
• Ability to follow instructions, safety practices and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks.
• Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly
• Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or job type.

• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to understand and apply fundamentals of laboratory procedures.

Skills

• Skill in use of personal computer including Microsoft Office or similar word processing programs, e-mail and the internet.

Special Requirements

• Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Must possess a valid State of Texas Drivers License Class “C” and good driving record as defined by City policy.
• Must obtain a Class D Water Certificate of Competency from the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within six months from the date of hire. Preference will be given to those who have already obtained the certification.
