POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Part-time Laborer – PT, Temporary, Seasonal - Approximately 40 hours per week for up to six months.

GRADE:
DEPARTMENT: Public Works FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Facilities Supervisor DATE PREPARED: October 31, 2007

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs responsible, unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance of buildings and grounds, water distribution system, wastewater distribution system, street operations, snow removal, and general maintenance work by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Operates light equipment such as tractor, riding lawnmower, bush hog, clearing rights-of-ways, road edges and maintaining grounds; maintains grounds by cutting grass, trimming hedges, and picking up litter; assists equipment operator in cleaning streets and collecting leaves; services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment and tools; conducts preventive maintenance on trucks, such as checking oil and fluids, changing oil if necessary, and making minor repairs; operates small tools such as ditch tamper, tapping machine, air compressor, power tools etc. in conjunction with assigned tasks; maintains water and sewer distribution lines by performing tasks such as water breaks, sewer breaks, sewer back ups, changing water meters, meter boxes, etc.; performs tasks in all types of weather conditions; assists in reading water meters. Other duties may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory. Ability to perform continuous heavy manual labor at a rapid pace, often under unfavorable conditions; ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted; general knowledge of grounds maintenance activities; ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment, such as lawnmowers and weed-eaters; knowledge of standard tools and equipment used in general labor work; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned, ability to understand and follow oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Driver’s License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL TRAINING: High School diploma or general education degree (GED) and some experience in unskilled labor
