There are currently five (5) vacancies and the eligible list created from this recruitment may be used to full future vacancies during the life of the list.

Regional Government Services and its staff are conducting the recruitment on behalf of the City of Walnut Creek.

The Position
Under general supervision, Landscape Maintenance Workers perform a variety of routine semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance tasks in parks, open space, or other landscaped areas; and perform related work as required. Landscape Maintenance Worker is the entry-level class in the landscape and park maintenance series. The employee is assigned to perform routine landscape or open space maintenance duties.

Representative Duties
At times, individual employee assignments may require emphasis of one or more of the landscape maintenance duties; however, employees are expected to be capable of performing the full range of duties described below for Landscape and Open Space Maintenance. These descriptions list the most common duties performed, but other closely related duties are also performed as varying needs arise.

Park Maintenance Duties:

Plants, prunes, waters, sprays, and fertilizes plants, flowers, shrubs, hedges, and trees; transplants seedlings; cultivates fields and flower beds; weeds flower beds and containers; re-sods and repairs lawns or playing areas; mows, trims, edges, aerates, and fertilizes lawns; trims hedges with hand and power tools; sweeps and rakes leaves.

  • Plants and removes trees as necessary.
  • Operates mowers, brush chippers, tractors, chain saws, rototillers, stump grinders, air spades, hand and power tools, skip loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, and other equipment; maintains tools and equipment used in park and open space maintenance and gardening; may make minor and simple repairs to wood structures or plumbing fixtures.
  • Assists in installation of sprinkler systems; cuts and threads pipe; may repair broken irrigation lines and sprinkler systems.
  • May mix substances such as fertilizers and pesticides according to written and oral instructions; may apply pesticides and other solutions to plants; sprays for diseases and insect controls; makes cuttings.
  • Performs simple and minor repairs to equipment and park structures.
  • May assist in the setting up and removal of lane closures and traffic control to complete work as assigned.

Open Space Maintenance Duties:

  • Preserves open space lands; maintains land, trails, and facilities according to established guidelines; mows, prunes, and abates weeds; installs and repairs fences, gates, hiking stiles, signs, and display boards.
  • Makes minor alterations to irrigation systems; installs and/or repairs broken irrigation lines; repairs sprinkler heads.
  • Performs simple and minor repairs to equipment and park structures.
  • Oversees volunteer crews as assigned; assists in preparation of open space social events; and provides information to general public concerning the City’s open space program.

Qualifications Guidelines
Contacts and Relationships:

Employee has contact primarily with City employees, but also the general public. Appropriate interaction with contacts is of significant importance, and employee is expected to deal effectively and courteously with the public.

Accountability:

The employee is responsible for complying with all City safety requirements and practices. Additionally, the employee is responsible for ensuring that any direct reports also comply with all City safety requirements and practices. Employee is responsible for routine landscape maintenance within an assigned area. Employee is accountable for the quality of work performed.

Typical Qualifications

As described below; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

Graduation from high school.

A minimum of one year of experience in the maintenance of parks or similar facilities.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record.

Possession of, or ability to obtain within the first year of employment, a State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of plants, trees, shrubs, insects, and diseases.

  • Knowledge of repair and maintenance procedures and techniques used in parks, open space, or grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the use of chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, etc. for maintenance of parks and other areas.
  • Knowledge of traffic safety guidelines and appropriate safety procedures when in close proximity to high volume traffic areas.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of CPR and first aid.
  • Skill in communicating effectively in English both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to safely operate various landscape maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Ability to measure areas of land and determine the amount of material needed to amend the soil or top dress a specific area.
  • Ability to identify irrigation parts and obtain correct replacement parts as needed.

Application – Minimum Qualification Assessment - (Pass/Fail) All completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed and assessed for each applicant's ability to meet the minimum work experience, training, and education qualifications.
Online Skills Assessment – (Pass/Fail) An Online Skills Assessment may be used to evaluate candidates’ knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. The Online Skills Assessment may evaluate these areas of knowledge and skills. The Online Skills Assessment will be conducted via a video conference platform and is tentatively scheduled the week of October 10, 2022. Candidates who pass the Online Skills Assessment will be invited to participate in the next step of the Selection Process.
Remote Screen Interview Exam – (Pass/Fail) Candidates who pass the Online Skills Assessment may be invited to a Remote Screen Interview Examination to evaluate training, experience, and other job-related qualifications for the position. The Remote Screen Interview (if necessary) will be conducted via a video conference platform and is tentatively scheduled for the week of October 17, 2022.
Practical Skills Exam – (Pass/Fail) Candidates who pass the Remote Screen Interview Exam may be invited to participate in an in-person practical exam to evaluate training, experience, and other job-related qualifications for the position. The Practical Skills Exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of October 24, 2022.
