Sodbusters has ten (10) openings for farmworkers for temporary, full-time employment. Farmworkers and laborers will assist in sod Loading by Hand. Most sod is harvested by a machine and stacked on a pallet in the field. Customers come out to the field, and Farm Laborers take 2’ by 5’ little roll sod off the pallet and stack it on or in the staging area. Little rolls of sod weigh about 30-40 pounds each. Must be able to transfer fifty (50) small rolls of sod by hand from a pallet held up by a forklift in about 2 minutes without stopping - on a busy day, you might load over 400 little rolls, which would be about 12,000 pounds. Forklift Operation: Using a forklift to load empty pallets on the sod stacking machine, staging full pallets from the stacking line, and loading little roll sod by hand. Collecting harvested 2.5’ by 80’ big rolls (weighing about 600 pounds each), staging them for truck loading, and then ultimately loading big rolls. Employer will offer 40 hours per week, Monday thru Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, depending on weather conditions work on Saturdays may be required. Workers are needed to begin work on 03/15/2023 through 12/15/2023. Work will be performed on the farm in tea, SD. The sod farms have three locations. One farm is located in Minnehaha county and is the NE 1/2 Section, 98N R53 W. The second sod farm is located in Lincoln County and is the 1/4 NW section T99N R53 W, and the final sod farm is in Turner county and is the NW 1/4 section 23 T98N R53 W. Workers will be paid no less than $17.33 p/hour. The worker is guaranteed to be paid at a minimum of ¾ of the contract. The employer will use a single workweek as its standard for computing wages due. Workers will be paid bi-weekly by check. The employer will make all deductions from the worker’s paycheck required by law. If the worker completes 50% of the work contract period, the employer will reimburse the worker for transportation and subsistence from recruitment to the place of work. Upon completion of the work contract or where the worker is dismissed earlier, the employer will provide or pay for the worker’s reasonable costs of return transportation and subsistence back home or to the place the worker originally departed to work, except where the worker will not return due to subsequent employment with another employer or where the employer has appropriately reported a worker’s voluntary abandonment of employment. The amount of transportation payment or reimbursement will be equal to the most economical and reasonable common carrier for the distances involved. Housing will be provided at no cost to the worker. Daily meals will be provided at a rate of at least $14.00 p/day during travel to a maximum of $59.00 p/day with receipts. Workers will be provided with convenient cooking facilities to prepare meals. The employer will provide workers at no charge with all tools, supplies, and equipment required to perform the job. Workers will be reimbursed in the first workweek for all visa, visa processing, border crossing, and other related fees, including those mandated by the government.
