OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under general direction, performs a variety of semi - skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, equipment operation and overall care of Playground Surfaces and adjacent areas, Court Surfaces, Park Shelters, and other properties and facilities, and to perform related duties as required.

The hiring range for this position starts at $19.55 - $23.90 hourly, depending on qualifications and experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for the maintenance and repairs of playground and outdoor court surfaces within the urban parks system including routine sweeping and removal of debris, maintenance, repair or replacement of a variety of playground surfaces, painting and patching and general maintenance of adjacent walks and landscape. This may include but is not limited to resilient surfacing care, rototilling and raking of sand and gravel surfaces, raking and cleaning of engineered wood surfaces, general repair and maintenance of outdoor court surfaces, graffiti removal, removing litter and debris from play areas and surrounding areas, edging, weed control, mowing, etc. to ensure safe and attractive sites. Works closely with and assists Playground Safety Coordinator, Maintenance Carpenter or other employees as needed.

2. Ensures all city and department safety procedures, regulations and policies are observed and followed in order to promote a safe work environment and prevent injuries and illnesses. Success measures include:

  • Enforces and adheres by organizational policies, rules and safety regulations related to persons using city vehicles, equipment, and park facilities.
  • Ensures safe public spaces while completing work tasks and raises safety concerns to appropriate supervisors or contacts.
  • Trains and supervises seasonal staff in safe operation of all equipment and vehicles.
  • Identifies, addresses or elevates any health and safety risks within the park facilities.
  • Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment and uses all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. (Does not operate a vehicle or equipment in an unsafe manner, including avoiding the use of a cell phone.)
  • Reports all injuries, accidents and damage to City property on the same day that they occur
  • Adheres to all MSDS requirements when using chemicals and is fully aware of the product specifications and required PPE

3. Performs rental shelter maintenance, clean up and set-up prior to reserved uses, clean-up and inspection of shelters and surrounding park areas before and after reserved uses, and direct customer service for shelter users. Coordinates with Supervisor, Parks and Recreation Department administrative staff and Parks field staff regarding shelter reservation schedules and event requirements. This work requires irregular or flexible work hours and weekend duty in response to shelter reservations approximately May through September.

4. Performs graffiti removal on Parks facilities including but not limited to the Skate Park, Shelters, Playgrounds, Buildings, walks and other facilities and structures as needed.

5. Performs Park trash and snow removal. Position requires irregular or flexible work hours and weekend duty in response to snow removal shifts approximately October through April

6. Maintains and repairs shelters, playgrounds and other park sites and facilities and other general park maintenance tasks as needed.

7. Uses and maintains a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools to accomplish tasks such as: pick-up trucks, trailers, rototillers, backpack blowers, brooms, shovels, edgers, power washers, plows, mowers, various hand tools and landscape maintenance tools etc.

8. Performs routine maintenance on related machinery, equipment, and tools.

9. Maintains records of materials and supplies, orders, purchases, and work performed.

10. Plans work schedule to meet specified objectives.

11. Works closely with and may supervise seasonal or temporary employees, volunteers, community service workers, jail crew workers or others. This may include providing work instruction and task assignment, communicating job expectations, providing appropriate feedback on performance, correcting problems with work habits or safety issues, ensuring adherence to City and Department policies and the accuracy of reported time use.

12. Works with public to resolve problems and answer questions.

13. Remains generally alert to conditions and events occurring in parks indicating misuse and anticipated or needed repairs.

  • Reports issues to Supervisor.
  • Coordinates work with other Parks field staff to ensure timely response to ongoing maintenance needs, special projects, resolution of identified issues or emergencies.

14. Remains generally alert to job site and weather conditions and acts accordingly to minimize down time and exposure to hazardous situations.

15. Other:

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, training, and/ or experience that demonstrates knowledge of general park maintenance practices. Experience in care of urban parks or other public settings. Knowledge of accepted parks maintenance practices and principles, experience with related machines, equipment, and tools. Ability to utilize all required safety equipment. Ability to perform physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment under all weather conditions. Ability and willingness to work irregular or flexible hours and weekends. Ability to plan work activities and to direct the work of others. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with co-workers and the public, including the ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public in difficult situations. Valid driver’s license. Have and maintain acceptable motor vehicle record.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:

Certificate or documented training in a related field. Experience using personal computers and software such as word processing and e-mail. Prior supervisory or lead worker experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS - Required Physical and Mental Effort, and Environmental Conditions:

Physical and Mental Effort: Routine lifting, carrying, walking and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and the public.

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an office setting. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.

Work Environment: Works primarily in an outdoor environment under all weather conditions. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.

Machines and equipment used include but are not limited to the following: Riding and hand mowers, edgers, weed eaters, backpack blowers, grinders, drills, chainsaws, rototillers; equipment such as tractors, front-end loaders/ backhoes, pick-up trucks, utility vehicles, trailers, snowplows, snow blowers; and hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, paint brushes and rollers, shovels, rakes, pruning shears and saws.
