Assist the Shop Foreperson in initiating and/or implementing a production schedule and man-hour estimates for completion of a job assignment. Orders the required materials and supplies for completion of a job. In conjunction with the Shop Foreperson, assigns duties and adjusts work procedures/schedules to meet production schedules. Ensures that workers accomplish required job assignments. Maintains employee time and certification records. Ensures that yard safety rules and regulations are carried out. Carries out other duties as assigned by the Shop Foreperson for the following shops;

  • Recognize and communicate to Foreman any priority projects or problems, such as employee or job costing issues.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed, bring problems to the attention of the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, QA Manager or HR Manager.
  • Coordinate, direct and lead workers engaged in shipbuilding activities. Assign work to employees, using material and worker requirements data.
  • Supervise crews to obtain top quality workmanship, efficiency, employee satisfaction, morale, communication, commitment, teamwork and pride.
  • Review and verify employee time sheets and submit to payroll on specified days. Ensure that hours are assigned to the proper vessel.
  • Suggest and initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, hires and training requirements. Adhere to the company’s Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Policy when taking part in any employment action or decision, such as hiring, job assignment, layoff or termination.
  • Update Foreman on problems and recommend motivational plans.
  • Communicate regularly about repair and maintenance needs on all major pieces of equipment on assigned jobs.
  • Relate to the employees in a professional, courteous and respectful manner, appropriately responding to their issues/ complaints.
  • Follow Daily Procedures & Protocols as set forth in job orientations and trainings/ meetings.
  • Analyzes written specifications, drawings, rough sketches and verbal instructions to plan layout and determine sequence of operations.
  • Installs ship's machinery such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps and steering gear.
  • Installs below deck auxiliaries such as evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps and condensers.
  • Installs parts and materials such as sheet metal covering, hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, lubricants and batteries into machines and mechanisms.
  • Works directly from work specifications using Tech manuals, manufacturer's drawings and blueprints.
  • Troubleshoots operational problems in ship's machinery.
  • Tests and inspects installed operational machinery and equipment during trial periods.
  • Provides conditional reports, operational reports, or item required reports.
  • May be required to set up and operate machine shop tools such as lathes, boring mills, plane, shaper, slotter, and milling machines to fabricate parts.
  • Adheres to and assures compliance with safety policy and procedures.

Work Environment*
Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
