Job Description
The Lead Academic Adviser plays an important role in the work of the Newhouse School’s advising team. This position will be a professional leader with expertise in advising undergraduate students who are either exploring major options or who have already declared a major. This role requires collaboration with the advising team, faculty, and departments to provide outstanding service to our students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees. Primary responsibilities include academic advising, career/professional, and post-graduation planning. In conjunction with best practices, the Lead Academic Adviser will design, develop, update, and deliver workshops for undergraduate students on topics related to major and/or minor selection and program requirements.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Masters preferred.
  • 3+ years experience in academic advising at the college-level is required.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Maintain knowledge of all academic advising and career counseling functions of the school and of allied offices to effectively advise students, faculty, faculty advisors and other defined stakeholders.
  • Expert level knowledge in academic counseling methods.
  • Ability to communicate and work with diverse populations is necessary, as are excellent interpersonal, planning, teamwork, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to independently interpret and make recommendations for improvement in advising policy and procedure.

Responsibilities
  • Provide academic advising through one-on-one and group sessions for assigned cohort of undergraduate students. This position will be responsible for advising the dual and double majors assigned to your team. Ensure requirements are met for all undergraduate students for on-time graduation. Support assigned advising team in degree audits, establish regular communications with advisees, and maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing University’s prescribed software.
  • In conjunction with best practices, design, develop, update, and deliver a variety of workshops for undergraduate students on topics such as: major and/or minor selection and program requirements. Support planning of special events that facilitate group advising, including collaborative events across campus that pertain to Newhouse students.
  • Provide academic and advising leadership under the guidance of the Director of Advising. Responsible for training and coordination of delivery of advising programing within assigned advising team. Provides expertise, support, and direction to advisers. Provides input on the performance of advisers within the team to the Director of Advising and Records.
  • Collaborate and maintain relationships with faculty and staff in schools and colleges within SU to help identify and guide students towards successful college and post college paths. Partner with Alumni and/or Employer relations (both in house and Central) to assist in helping to achieve education and career goals. Serve as main point of contact with students and guide them through various program options in the University.
  • Identify, track, and report metrics on all academic-related outcomes such as student appointments. Report metrics to College and University leadership as requested. Evaluate progress and assess programming and delivery for continuous improvement of student success.
