Lead Deckhand will prepares barges assigned to the towboat for safe and timely transport. Performs tasks associated with building and breaking tow, as well as towboat and barge maintenance. Performs tasks in all weather conditions both outside and in the confines of the vessel while navigating the inland waterway systems.

The work schedule is 28/28 or 28/14. Work is performed on rotating shifts, with a six hour on and six hour off schedule of approximately 28 days at a time. This position requires a valid TWIC card.

The Lead Deckhand will:

  • Instruct, train, and educate Deck Crewmembers on the safe conduct of all their tasks and report on the progress of individual Deck Crewmembers.
  • Convey instructions and assignments from Captain or Pilot to the Deck Crew.
  • Conduct job briefings before, during and after engaging in any task and train all Deck Crewmembers to conduct briefings. The Lead Deckhand shall brief all new Deckhands in safe working practices and safety rules.
  • Assist the Captain or Pilot in tow planning, locking operations, transiting narrow bridges, and in other situations where a lookout is required. In all tasks, the Lead Deckhand will ensure that all applicable safety and operational policies are carried out.
  • Conduct minor repairs to deck equipment as required.
  • Conduct minor repairs to barges in tow as required.
  • Conduct Hazard Communication/Right-To-Know job briefings on hazardous cargoes in tow and prior to picking up.
  • Conduct engine room walk-through inspections in a timely manner as directed, and report any discrepancies.
  • With approval of the Captain or Pilot, give the Deck Crew adequate breaks when working for long periods in adverse weather conditions.
  • Maintain a proper inventory of deck gear in conformance with operational requirements. The Lead Deckhand will inspect the gear on tow including portable/stationary rigging and winches. The Lead Deckhand shall replace anything that is damaged or weakened.
  • Maintain proper emergency rigging count for vessel’s horsepower class.
  • Oversee work assignments to the Deck Crew to maximize safe and efficient operations.
  • Conduct all Company-required tow and barge inspections including accurate checks of the barge drafts and reporting them to the Master.
  • Conduct monthly safety audits and inventories of rigging, barge pumps and deck supplies.
  • Retrieve wiring and tow gear when barges are dropped or obtain substitute gear from the fleet.
  • Ensure the tow is properly wired and all rigging is tight in accordance with Company rigging requirements
  • Ensure vessel’s interior and exterior are well maintained, clean and orderly
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
