Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Central Processing Lead Technician supervises Central Sterile Technicians in the supply and processing of surgical instruments. This position also functions as an integral member of the Sterile Processing Management Team.

Essential Job Functions
Monitors personnel in the correct usage of all washers and sterilization equipment. Ability to troubleshoot all equipment used in the process Familiar with Case Cart assembly/ processes and instrument tracking system (Censitrac); as well as instrument bar coding. Understands principles of safe work practices and universal protocol Coordinates with the Sterile Processing Nurse Educator for the orientation and training of employees. Plans, assigns, and checks work produced. Under direction of Central Processing Manager, evaluates and counsels as well as input in hiring and personnel performance evaluations. Demonstrates expert knowledge of care and handling of surgical instruments. Properly assembles, packages, and prepares all supplies for sterilization. Performs quality control checks of surgical instrument trays, to insure correct and undamaged instruments are included. Works closely with the Central Processing Manager and Nurse Educator to assist with training of staff, (new and current) and student work training from accredited academic programs.(Community College System, Fortis College) Assists Staff with proper documentation of biological and chemical testing needed to assure sterility of instruments, and the proper procedures for recall of trays. Ability to make minor repairs on instruments, oversees the repair and replacement of instruments on all procedure trays. Performs checks on various instrument trays to insure proper tray lists are being followed. Assists in the training and evaluation of wrapping procedures/products and proper completion of tasks. Monitors the pickup and delivery of supplies and equipment. Works with Nursing/Committees/Respiratory to oversee and make the appropriate changes on all carts, trays, and supplies as related to Central Sterile Processing. Oversees the techniques used for monitoring, packaging, wrapping, and handling of sterile supplies. Insures compliance with established policies and procedures. Insures Bar Coding of surgical instrumentation is kept current and accurate for the completions of the surgical procedural trays.

Other Job Functions
Serves as a resource to internal and external customers on all Central Service Processing Functions. Takes inventory, orders, and puts away supplies. Transports equipment as needed. Responsible for maintaining professional competence by participation in unit based in-services as well as completion from outside sources. Maintains Certified Registered Central Service Technician certification. Accepts reassignment to various BSR Central Processing units. Performs other related job duties as required.

Employment Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required

Certified Surgical Technician (thru accredited school) or certified C.S. tech and/or 5 years work experience as same

Requires knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and medical terminology. Expert knowledge of surgical procedures, sterility, and aseptic technique. Has knowledge of the sterilization processes, infection control principles and ability to work with equipment related to the sterilization processes.

Certified Registered Central Service Technician, (CRCST) certification thru the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management required within one (1) year of employment.
