The Center for Information Technology (CIT) at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Lead Systems Administrator. This is a full-time, 12-month recurring Administrative and Professional Staff (A&PS) position reporting to the Manager of Digital Infrastructure. Oberlin College is a highly selective liberal arts college of 2800 students and operates a powerful best-of-breed network in order to support education and research on campus.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain core enterprise services including DNS and DHCP.
  • Manage the College’s Google suite of applications and account management.
  • Support Okta Identity Management environment, encompassing user and application provisioning.
  • Manage various aspects of software licensing, including technical implementation of licensing (RedHat Satellite) and vendor contract renewals.
  • Responsible for the technical design, planning, implementation, performance tuning, and recovery procedures for Oberlin College’s enterprise server (Linux and Windows) environment.
  • Serve as a technical expert in the area of system administration for complex operating systems.
  • In partnership with CIT departments, analyze system requirements and develop system specifications and solutions that meet or exceed operational, availability, and reliability requirements.
  • Perform troubleshooting activities involving outside vendors and other support personnel and/or organizations.
  • Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature, and user abuse.
  • Develop procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of the Oberlin College CIT server and information environment.
  • Implement load and performance analysis and monitoring to identify potential problem areas, provide assistance in devising targeted metrics to assess server performance on an ongoing basis, assist in capacity planning, and eliminate server environment bottlenecks.
  • Provide interoperability with external systems.
  • Ensure availability in accordance with College Service Level Agreements (SLA’s).
  • Expand or modify server infrastructure to serve new purposes or improve workflow.
  • Produce detailed server diagrams accurately depicting server architecture.
  • Document and report all server environment changes.
  • Receive and respond to after-hours server environment issues.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance activities.
  • The primary location for this psition is remote with occasional onsite work.

Essential Job Functions
  • Knowledge of IT security principles and methods, such as firewalls, demilitarized zones, and encryption.
  • Knowledge of secure remote access technology concepts.
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux system administration.
  • Skill in analyzing server traffic capacity and performance characteristics.
  • Skill in implementing, maintaining, and improving established server security practices.
  • Skill in using server management tools to analyze server utilization and capacity management.
  • Cloud services hosting environment knowledge with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Azure.
  • Knowledge of server backup and restore procedures as well as disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • Experience with software provisioning and configuration management software such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of experience with Windows and Linux system administration in an enterprise environment.
  • System administration experience using scripting languages such as Python or Powershell.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with an ethnically and culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students in an environment with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment characterized by ambiguity and change.
  • Reconcile competing technological and policy considerations when recommending solutions

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with hyperconverged infrastructure.
  • Experience with virtualization and backup technologies such as Veeam and VMWare.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental IP networking concepts.


Compensation
Within the range established for this Administrative and Professional Staff position, salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This position would have the opportunity to work a hybrid work schedule.
