Position Summary

Many of Duke University’s strategic academic goals rely on a growing set of educational technologies to enhance the learning of Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Computational Thinking concepts across the many disciplines in the Duke curriculum.


This position works on the Learning Technology Services and Strategy team within Learning Innovation supporting the teaching and learning mission of Duke University by providing technical support, service management, and functional leadership for more STEM-focused learning technologies. Responsibilities

Primary Focus - 60%

  • Provides functional leadership, communication, and technical support for learning technology services in Duke’s learning technology ecosystem, including Gradescope, Edstem (Discussion, Lessons, Workspaces), and Coursera Labs. Serves as the primary point of contact with 3rd party vendors.
  • Maintains expertise on University OIT services used in STEM teaching and learning such as virtual machines, Jupyter, and git.
  • Consults with staff and users on how to best use learning technologies in their courses and learning experiences.
  • Gathers and analyzes user feedback and system performance metrics; translates into detailed reports, recommendations, and goals for related services.
  • Identifies and supports pilots and experiments in collaboration with staff and faculty to support and advance Duke’s learning technology ecosystem and new teaching and learning approaches.
  • Curates and develops resources that enable faculty and students to use learning technology successfully. This includes but is not limited to the Learning Innovation website, blog, and technology support websites as well as training workshops and webinars.

Shared LTS Duties - 40%

  • Provide technical support for other services and projects in Duke’s learning technology ecosystem including the LMS. Participate in support processes and internal communication. Act as liaison between software vendors, developers, and users. Perform functional and quality assurance testing and bug reporting on services, projects, and integrations.
  • Maintain an understanding of the current developments, impacts, and best practices regarding diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility in the learning technology space.
  • Review professional literature; network with learning technology professionals inside and outside the University; participate in communities associated with learning technologies deployed at Duke to help keep others in Learning Innovation informed about new technical developments and trends.
  • Undertake special projects and perform other duties in support of Learning Innovation activities and programs.

  • Troubleshoot technology issues with users, stakeholders, and vendors and use good judgment to resolve them.
  • Manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks, and use good judgment in providing IT services to users
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences across a variety of media including email, web conferencing, and in-person.
  • Troubleshoot technology issues with users and use good judgment to resolve them.

Preferred:

  • Understanding of pedagogy and how learning technologies help achieve the teaching and learning mission of the university.
  • Experience with STEM teaching & learning; how teaching techniques, environments (such as labs), and grading may differ from other teaching and learning environments
  • Create service and project deliverables such as schedules, scope documents, or analysis.
  • Collect and interpret user feedback and system metrics.
  • Plan and facilitate presentations and workshops.
  • Prior experience working in a higher education academic technology unit.
